Red lines on a '70?

I think they would look nice, but in '70 the redlines were being phased out and might have been considered a little passé by then. They offered them on certain lines but production was very low. The Monte Carlo offered them '70-only and only 190 sets were sold. I think that there were 2(!) El Caminos in '70 with G70-14 redlines. According to typical option lists they weren't even available. White-lettered was where it was at in '70.

My '70 Big Chevy Owner's Manual lists both G70-15 & H70-15 redlines, and I have seen a '70 in person with them, Here's a picture of a '70 Big Chevy with redlines. (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/showphoto.php/photo/3763/size/big/ppuser/335)

If you go with redlines, be ready to hear comments from people about how they weren't offered in '70.

So there were possibly two 1970 El Caminos that came with redlines, but no 1970 Chevelles or Malibus?

I am not sure if any were produced with redlines. I figure that some early production cars might have come with them, but I have seen no production figures to substantiate it. I have seen a promotional picture of a '70 GTO with redlines, plus the '70 Buick GS 350 & GS455 (silver & gold cars) were featured together in an ad wearing redlines in late '69.

Like I said, they might be correct but you'd have a tough time convincing people. What model '70 Chevelle are you referring to with redlines? An SS or a Malibu?

An SS

I don't ever recall seeing a '70 SS with redlines. Our '69 SS Chevelle came with whitewalls and they were certainly passe for an SS car. OK for a big Chev perhaps. Our other '69 came with Uniroyal white lettered tires and that was where it was at during these years.

Here's a mock-up I made of a '70 with redlines and bare Corvette rallies. Feedback appreciated.

I guess I could say this:

Were redlines available on a '70? Perhaps, but show me a build sheet.

Do they look right on a '70? Not really, but some cars lines did use them. Such instances are rare. Show me a build sheet or put on Polyglas GTs (70s) or fiberglass belted dual white stripes (78s) (if you are going for the stock look).

Were they available as replacement? Um, yes... (day 2  , this is reaching torchured overwork)

Am I the authority? I am a legend in my own mind :D:waving:

Have fun and post your pictures! It's all good.

The only right answer is do whatever you want with your car, but since you asked for opinions....

It's wrong, I have a Red on Red 70 and if there were even 10-15 documented cases I'd do it.

There aren't, and the countless people muttering under there breath at car shows that you have the incorrect tires on your car is going to get on your nerves.

I know.... who cares what other people think?

You do... or you wouldn't have asked.

I wouldn't do it Bro.

Every 70 I see with rally wheels dulls my enthusiasm . They should have the correct wheel and RWL tires. Even blackwall tires take away from nice cars.

My production figures show 10 Redlines on a 70 chevelle. 8 RPO PY5 F 70 and 2 RPO PY7 G70.

I'll pretend I didn't read that :)

I stand somewhat corrected. In 70, Chevelle and Monte Carlo RPO codes were cumulative. In 1970 145,976 Monte Carlo's were built. Under RPO code P91 194 Red Stripe tires were placed on a model production run of 145,976 units. Not hard to see where they went. They 10 I mentioned were placed on vehicles within the remainder of the 448,762 Chevelles produced. This information comes from Tailfins and Bowties, probably the first source of complete Chevrolet production information. In 70 6 were shown on big cars and 0 on Vettes and Novas. They may have been excluded from the SS package and available on one of the other 7 models carried in the chevelle line up.

I bought this book in 96 and it may have been updated since. One thing I am still adament about: They do not look right on a 70 SS.

All 1970 SS 396--454s Chevelle & El Caminos DID NOT HAVE raised white letter tires. And they were NOT all Goodyear. The one owner that I ordered in Feb. of 70 Was delivered to me at Sahli Chevrolet in Beaver Falls, Pa. in April 1970. Its an SS 454 M-22 El Camino It was equipped with
B.F. Goodrich Silvertown tires and they had a WHITE STRIPE, No raised white letters and NO -F-41 Suspension. (note F-41 Sus. Pkg. was not an option on ANY 68-72 El Camino)
P.S. I have a picture of my Camino from Oct-Nov. of 70 that shows the Goodrich White Stripe Tires.
Also remember "Who was the lowest bidder on tires That month When the car was built? "

P.S. I am not real bright, But what would Chevy do with " Leftover " any type of tire and the end of the year. Throw them away??? Any White letter or White wall of any type is an " Up-Grade " For the cheeper body style. Could it be that some cars got an up-grade at N/C.
Or did they throw them in a dumpster cuz they are not correct. Or did someone wind up getting FREE-N/C white wall or white letters on the 6 Cyl. Standard shift 4 door. or a 307 -3 speed El Camino.
Could this be possible?
