: low rpm dead spot, no power off the line?
bigblockelky Oct 25th, 04, 11:46 PM ok my cars been acting a hair wiered for a couple of days, leaving another TC members house the other day i got on it a bit and it didnt do crap.. fell on its face. after i got home i looked around a bit under the hood and found nothin unusual, ive had a semi burnt plug wire for awhile but its not burnt all the way through. my engine set up is a 454, 30 over, hei w/ accel supercap and rotor, msd spiro core wires, delco plugs, 770 street avenger carb, weind 180 2p manifold, hooker 1"7/8's primary headers. today its been not wating to return to idle rpm, it will stick up higher if you rev it up and you have to rev it up agasin to get it to drop, i made sure none of the wires were toasted, changed the secondary spring in the carb ( it was brand new but what the hell.. couldnt hurt)and played with the idle a bit.. it wont burn out either the stalls not very high and it usually has a MAJOR traction problem? any ideas? i kno wits a broad range of symptoms and possible problems but im open to any info or suggestions, thanks

maliboo66 Oct 26th, 04, 3:02 AM vacuum leak? anybody
possibly the mechanical advance weights are dirty and sticking-
or the breaker plate is sticking if you have vac. advance.
clean the weights and spray a silicone lube on them. you can also use a little oil but never use grease.
the carb and choke linkage could be sticking or binding too.
JRS70LS5 Oct 26th, 04, 11:23 AM I agree with the mechanical wieghts sticking, that would cause the high idle, and if they don't advance enough, engine will be real sluggish!
bigblockelky Oct 26th, 04, 2:29 PM the distributor is a vacume advance sorry should have mentioned that up there., when i bought the car the guy said he had done a rebuild on the distributor, but he had it 180 off when i got it and rebuilt the carb that was on it wrong so i dont doubt it could have a problem in that area. i thought maybe it was a vacume leak too but i couldnt find any lines off.. theres not many vacume lines to have trouble with, just from the back of the carb to the brakes and valve cover and the advance for the distributor.
bigblockelky Oct 26th, 04, 11:10 PM ok did some tinkering today, still has an off the line problem but seems to be pretty alive after it passes that point, herews my current symptoms, if you try and do a brake stand it will not spin the tires, itll stall up a bit and if you let right off the gas it will die, if you nail it from a stop without brakes it goes nowhere for 10 feet then wakes up ( at that point the traction problem kicks in..lol) i made a few passes with the same result everytime. my carb is brand new but it kinda seems like that would be a carb problem? right.....
Xtreme70SS396 Oct 27th, 04, 8:39 AM Check your spark first - primarily timing, but pull your plugs and check for fouling also. Check the resistance on your plug wires, too - but I don't remember where the cutoff between good and bad is with the wires. I'm sure a search would help in that are.
THEN check the carb - could just be dirty. If not, start by migrating up in the size of your shooters and see if it makes a difference. Make one change at a time, or you won't know what the impact of the changes are.
THORSS70 Oct 28th, 04, 2:07 AM Jay, I e-mailed you on this. If we can look at the car this weekend I will be available for any help I can provide. We'll get it sorted out.

The carb is brand new, so not to concerned with it. Timing, plugs/wires, vacuum leaks then carb tuning.
slpin Oct 28th, 04, 2:15 AM i agree on the distributor
my distributor starts advacing around 1000 rpm... so if i rev it, it drops to 1200rpm and takes a few seconds for it to drop back to my 900rpm idle
