: Trailer tool box

Anyone use one on their open trailer? Im looking at buying one, and mounting it on the tongue. I want to put my electric winch at the bottom, and also use it to carry the usual stuff--some tools, straps, etc. Any pictures of what you have or use?? I see there is a tool box at Lowes that is made for this purpose. It's angled for the tongue, it looks good in the picture, but Im not sure it would fit every trailer the same. Also, it's $198.00. I guess that's not terrible, but I dont want to make this project too expensive. Im thinking a regular square one would also work well. I can always weld another support somewhere if needed. Any ideas?? Thanks, John

One suggestion...
If you buy/install a regular square toolbox instead of the angled one, be sure it's not too wide! It will cause damage to the tow vehicle when backing into a tight spot.
The angled ones are made that way for a reason.
Ask me how I know... ;)

Well, OK...if you insist....how do you know, Bill?:p:p

Hey, good point. Maybe I should just go for that one at Lowe's.

Hi Johnny,

Try checking out any boat builders near you. Here's a link of one near me, and they make first class boats and checker plate tool boxes for the logging industry here. Maybe this will help http://lifetimer.bc.ca/toolboxesLifetimerallweldedboatsaluminumboatswelde daluminumboats.htm

Good luck

I bought one from Northern Tool & Equipment for about $200. Mine is not intended for the tongue though, it's a long rectangle and I mounted it on the extreme front of the deck. I'm pretty happy with it.

Thanks guys...Mike, that's what I was thinking of doing, there is certainly a lot of room side to side back by the deck. Those triangular shaped ones dont seem to have very much room. I did the one up at Lowe's, but I think I'll just return it. The aluminum looks good on the black trailer:thumbsup:, but it's so small, after I mount the winch inside, there wont be room for too much else. Thanks again, I'll keep looking around. I havn't checked Northern Tools yet, I'll do that tonite. The prices are good, shipping isnt too bad either.

I have a winch(not in the tool box), it's on a winch plate and a diamond plated tongue box from Northern tools. Works well and there's more room than I thought there would be.

John,
If you want a regular rectangle one I have a stainless diamond plate one from my fullsize Ford, sold the truck so I dont need the box. I paid $75 for it, so $75 and you can have it if you want it.
