Two part question.. well maybe more.

How come all those online shift point programs always say (for me anyway) to shift at my max rpm?
How come some folks shift at different rpms for different gears? I think I know the answer to this but I want to hear it from the horses mouth..
are those online shift point things usually right?

I was told shift point should be 300 RPMS or so over peak HP for best performance at the track.

10% higher than peak power, example if the engine makes it's most power at 6000 then shift at 6600, gear splits will effect shift rpm as well as traction. You can crutch a traction problem by short shifting usually killing off some torque. At least that's the way i understand it graemlins/beers.gif

Bob hit it on the head....what you hear is for the "average" motor you won motor will have its own preferences...Ideally you want to start accelerating at max torque and shift past max hp falling back down to max torque. People shift after max hp bc usually it isnt dropping off rapidly.. and so it brings the car closer to max torque or higher into the power band of the next gear. If each gear was a xx% reduction of the previous then the shift points would be the same..but since the gears are often not matched like that different shift points for each gear often work best....

I have found no repeatable difference in ET or MPH whether I shift at 5600 or 6600.

I shift at 5600, cross stripe at 6000.

Its probably because your torque curve is a line :D
