: looking for a quieter exhaust
mike1985 Nov 5th, 04, 2:14 PM I'm looking at these dynomax super turbo mufflers 2.5" part # 17733off set in center out ( 410 CFM) 373 HP..or17734 center in center out 420CFM 382HP. Dynomax said it's the quietest performance muffler they make. Any i looked at the summit muffler, it looks identical, but they won't say who makes it and have no flow #'s for it.
Both mufflers are 14" case and 18.5" total length ?
Dynomax $36.88 ea.
Summit $14.75 ea.
My ravins are 2.5" center in and out blk, only 600 miles on them. they cost $80 ea. new...what are they worth used ?

Cam Sweet Nov 5th, 04, 2:28 PM All ex's are noisy. That's why they're ex's!!
Sorry, I couldn't resist...

mr 4 speed Nov 5th, 04, 3:04 PM I would personally use the Summit mufflers..I've had them before on 2 cars...great muffler for the money, and they didn't sound any different than the Dynomax Super Turbos I've had.
Used mufflers are what they are...I'd say $50-60 for the pair maybe..you could try asking $100/pair,but you might have them for awhile.
mike1985 Nov 5th, 04, 3:09 PM cam sweet, i can't blame you..i fixed the title.
mr4 speed ,
thanks for the reply on the mufflers. I was leaning toward the summit one's , just thought i would ask first.
As for my old ones, i'm not looking to get rich, just didn't know what a fair price would be.
BTW, which mufflers do you run on the chevelle? That's a beatuiful car.
Mike
GRN69CHV Nov 5th, 04, 3:25 PM Mike,
I run the 20" case "Hemi" Turbos. These are as close to stock muffler quiet you can get.
mike1985 Nov 5th, 04, 4:03 PM I'll have to measure to see if i can fit them in there.
mr 4 speed Nov 5th, 04, 5:25 PM Mike,thanks for the compliments
I run 10+ year old Flowmasters on my car.
They're actually pretty quiet with a full 2.5" exhaust,but it sounds very,very deep..not even like a Flowmaster

I have the Summits on my '81, I like them. I had Flowmasters on it for a short while and I've been trying to figure out why they were so loud. I bought the 50 series but it almost seems like they were boxed wrong and are actually 40 series or the Delta Flows or something.
Grape Ape Nov 5th, 04, 7:08 PM Have you looked at Magnaflow mufflers? I was looking to tone down my 68 with 3" exhaust and I put 2 of the Magnaflows on.
Quieter and a much lower pitch.
Just my opinion of course.
mike1985 Nov 8th, 04, 8:54 AM I did some measuring and i can't fit the 20" muffler in there.
I haven't looked at magnaflow, i will.
thanks
About roughly how much do Magnaflows go for? I may be moving in about another 2-3 months or so, and if I do, I'm probably going to have to go with a quieter exhaust/mufflers. If they're not too expensive, then I just might give them a try.
Grape Ape Nov 9th, 04, 5:52 PM Magnaflows do cost a little more. I paid $225 including tax to have my old flo pro's removed and the magna flows installed.
I was a little concerned about the cost but I figured why try to save $100 and not be totally satisfied.
Slowpoke70 Nov 9th, 04, 6:18 PM Alex, just go with the Summit mufflers. Dynomax is the supplier of both Summit headers and Mufflers. When my bro ordered the mufflers he just ordered Summits and the box they came in said Thrush. I checked the PNs and its the same as SOME of the Dynomax Super Turbos, the cheaper ones. But you pay more if you order them as Dynomax??
Same muffler, different prices.

Well, if it's kool with you and your brother, I'd love to hear what they sound like. I'm kinda stuck between.....I "need" a quieter exhaust (if I do move) but I don't want to sound "wimpy"....vs. I love the way my car sounds like it has "balls" tongue.gif :D
$225 including tax doesn't sound too bad. I think I paid around $220 about 5-6 years ago when I first installed my old (but new back then) Flowmasters with dual 2 1/2" pipes.
mike1985 Nov 10th, 04, 8:30 AM I found a muffler test from a Pontiac test wagon, runs low 12's @110. I had this stored away at home. Anyway it tested mufflers, X and H pipes, also all backed up by track testing, flow testing and backpressure testing. The muffler that's the QUIETEST and made the most HP turned out to be the dynomax hemi turbo #17749. This muffler has a 20" case and their about $43 each from summit. I have a pair here today and have a guy putting them on this afternoon. I'll let you know how they worked out. They are single in and out, I don't care if i have dual tips or not, that's just me though.
If you guys are interested in this write up i can fax this to someone and maybe they can figure out how to get it attached to this thread, or start a new one with the info provided.
Mike
PS. i thought they wouldn't fit, but after careful maesuring and a good ex. guy he said it'll be tight but we can fit them in there.
GRN69CHVY...i wonder if you knew your mufflers are the quietest, yet have less backpressure and perform better than the smaller dynomax turbo's ?

his car is also used as a "test mule" in the Torque Tech catalog testing different exhaust systems.

mike1985 Nov 10th, 04, 10:29 AM yep that's the car and guy.
the article was written in Pontiac Enthusiast Magazine, and was given permision to post on the internet by the writer Eric Douthitt( The Pontiac Garage)
1966_L78 Nov 10th, 04, 4:09 PM I have any older Flowmaster system on my car (~9 years old), and two years ago I replaced just the mufflers with the Summit ones (under $30 per pair, how could I go wrong)...
I think the car is quieter, and has less of a droning sound, but my wife, friends and neighbors (doh!) all think its almost as loud (I also did some floor insulation and a convertible top-didn't have one, so that might have quiet the interior some...)
So they are still fairly loud, but a little mellower than the flowmasters... I guess I am getting old...
mike1985 Nov 12th, 04, 8:14 AM I went with the 20" dynomax turbo's. The car has a low deep rumble at idle, but when going down the road it's so quiet that i can hear the road noise from the tires again.
here's the exact article

Replace it with a Mallory 140. :D
mike1985 Nov 12th, 04, 9:19 AM I have been thinking about that, but have a few questions. Is this pump quieter ? How much ? Do you run a return line regulator or a dead head regulator ? I think their all quieter with a return regulator ?
thanks for the info Mike

I think their all quieter with a return regulator ?Definately. And I think a deadheaded holley blue is about the loudest normal pump I've heard. Although some of the super giant dragster pumps are pretty loud.... smile.gif
Rich-L79 Nov 12th, 04, 12:16 PM Magnaflows are the way to go in my opinion. An x- or h-pipe would quiet things down as well. The larger the case the quieter the Magnaflow. Good deep sound without rattling windows or sounding tinny. They also come with a lifetime warranty, can't beat that.
mike1985 Nov 12th, 04, 1:08 PM Rich,
I have an H pipe in front and back. This is supposed to help the corvettes with interior resonance. I looked at the magnaflows, their pricey if i remember correctly.
Rich-L79 Nov 12th, 04, 1:33 PM Yes, but you get what you pay for. And if you keep the car, the lifetime warranty is worth whatever you might pay for mufflers in the future. My set are aluminized so I don't expect them to wear out but if they do the next set is free. I'm thinking I'll go with the stainless steel version on the wagon.
I think I paid a little over $300 to install a complete aluminzied system with an h-pipe and Magnaflos on the truck. Doesn't seem too outrageous.
mike1985 Nov 12th, 04, 1:50 PM true
that's a good deal
427L88 Nov 12th, 04, 7:45 PM I paid $70 ea installed for the 22" Magnaflows.
I guess you can say that it is well known that you get what you pay for....
I'm starting to become really interested in getting some Magnaflows for my Velle, but I'm wondering if it's worth it to buy them off Ebay. I seen some Magnaflows going for $58, but I'm not sure if that's per muffler or the pair. I've also been told that I can just buy some Summit mufflers or Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers which are, I'm guessing, the exact same thing as Magnaflows and cost a whole lot less. What do you guys think? Which is the better route to go?
Buy then direct from Magnaflow, or dealer.....
But them off Ebay....
or buy some Summit/Dynomax mufflers?
thanks
Slowpoke70 Nov 13th, 04, 12:04 AM Alex, the Summit mufflers are the same as Dynomax. That said, I don't know if Magnaflow thas some better internal design than the others, and Magnaflow does not supply Summit with its turbo muffler line, those are Dynomax/Thrush mufflers.
