: Adding Hood Scoops to the '68...

While I'm working on the body getting ready to shoot paint before October, I would like to add two hood scoops to the '68.

Recommendations on where to get the scoops, nothing fancy, and I would like them functional...meaning forward facing intakes and air flow to the carb. More than just the two humps on a SS.

Any ideas now, before I paint and clear coat?

Thanks.

How about a cowl hood for it?

Don't expect much airflow or any real power increases.

Make one like this, do it out of fiberglass and add me to your first sale because I'll take one..

every time i see that picture of the red 68 with hood scoops it gets my wheels turning on how to make one.i was at a local car show the other day and was looking at a 71 or 72 buick GS with hood scoops.the location of the scoops on the GS are pretty close to what would be the front of 68-69 SS hood bumps.i was thinking that if you cut out and mod it like the red 68 velle and use a 71-72 buick GS air cleaner under the hood.i think was some modification you could be it to work and be funcational.

heres some pictures

That pic of the scoops looks quite menacing and cool. That's exactly what I would like.

But perhaps now after looking at the photo, I might do it next year instead. I would have to cut slots in the hood, fabricate the scoops from fiberglass and redo the hood. Big job.

To those doing it now, what has been the procedure?

Yes...next year, but planning for it now.

I have a buick GS hood waiting to get cut into pieces and installed on my chevelle hood. In order to make that swap workable you also need to redesign the inner structure of the hood. So its more involved then just cutting out the humps and welding them in.

Also on a Buick site it has been said several times that GS hood scoops affected engine performance in a bad way as they actually sucked air OUT of the carb.

If you had the scoops made out of glass personally I believe it would be best to graft them into a glass hood. Mixing glass and steel IMO never yields lasting good results. Steel and glass expand contract at different rates. A glass scoop bonded in the middle of a steel hood will show in time. JMO...Eric
