Okay after taking the cover off is it better to just replace the gasket? skip the gasket and use RTV only? Or use a new gasket and a thin bead of RTV with the new gasket?

Thanks

I usually just use a bead of "The Right Stuff" on mine....Gaskets never seem to seal it..

I've used a gasket with RTV, worked well. I've had good luck also with RTV and no gasket. So I would just clean it really well with brake cleaner and use RTV and call it good. Apply a bead, let it skin over a bit and put on the cover. Torque it down just a little so it squeezes out. Then come back in an hour and torque to final value.

I usually wipe a thin coat of sealant on both sides of the gasket.

There is a High Temp RTV dark silver/black - Permatex Ultra Black 598B, seems good for that kind of job.
