I didn't see it but heard the announcment that a new GTO (Holden) ran 11's (11.66 IIRC). Since these come with a Chevy engine (LS??), he was able to run the at Super Chevy. I'm sure something must have been done to the car, I doubt they could go this quick showroom stock. I don't know the mph.

one of the monthly rags did an evaluation of the car & said it was a dog. they must have added a few bolt ons to it.

I was at Super Chevy ( disapointing this year) and there was NO GTO running 11's from the factory...i saw an 8 sec Mopar, so you know that WAS CHEVY POWERED,,ha ha

I was pitted next to the 'Cuda. BBC it was. I didn't say the GTO was factory. Just reporting what the announcer said.

It probably had a blower on it like the holden "ute" called LS6camino elsewhere on this board. Neet truck from down under.

IMO, a mid 13 second street car sure ain't a dog!

the new GTO could run 9's in the quarter, get 50 mpg, and balance your checkbook while cooking you dinner, and people would still say it sucks, because it "isn't a real GTO"..
if Pontiac didn't want to cash in on the 40th anniversary of the "original muscle car", and called it something else, everyone would say what a great car it is, and how awesome it is that someone makes a pushrod V8 powered rwd midsize sedan that is actually kinda affordable..

as for the folks that hate it because it's called GTO
hey- people- IT'S JUST A NAME.. get over it...

it has a fantastic drivetrain, no doubt, but it's butt-ugly to look at. and all the tests i've seen of the new GTO, it hasn't cracked the 13's yet, let alone mid 13's. best i've seen recorded is a 14 flat, which a tenth slower than the 4200lbs Chrysler 300c! getting whopped by a Chrysler that weighs 300lbs more, is a little embarrassing i would think.

Still 11 seconds, even on a 100hp shot of juice,
It’s a car that will haul a family of 4.
Get 27 or more mpg.
And go around turns.

If it weren't for the forth coming Mustang, being significantly less expensive,
And the new (gulp) Dodge Magnum, on the way with 4 wheel drive and a Hemi,
The GTO would be the car for me.

I like the looks better than the Dodge, and its got more room than the Mustang.

I've seen 2 magazine reviews that have 6 speed cars running mid 13s, and one that put an automatic in the low 15s.

Thats a car a regular working guy can afford,
and while its not the fastest production car,
it will put a beating on most cars its likely to encounter.

i don't call $35,000 affordable for a working man. that's about a years salary for me. it sure as heck ain't worth that much to me. it isn't even American made. so in a couple of years it'll be worth maybe $15,000 not a very good investment as far as i'm concerned. i mean if it were attractive to look at and was made here in the USA it might be worth buying. how many "working class citizens" can afford to pay more per month on a car than their mortgage? the F-body cars were fantastic performers, but being overpriced killed them too, and they were a little cheaper than the GTO. let's face it, the GTO's competition is going to be with the Mustang, and the Mustang is faster, better looking, and cheaper too. it's going to be a no brainer for most people in that market. what mags did you see 13's out of a GTO? only one's i've seen have been a best of a 14.00, and that was even including magazine "correction factors".

Man! You guys need to keep in mind that this is the first year GTO is out. Do you know of any automakers that put out the best-of-the-best model the first time? How many years of the Mustang Cobra did it take for Ford to put a supercharger on it?

Give the GTO some time, and it will get better. I can't believe you guys are complaining about a 350HP LS1 in a RWD Pontiac.

Like I said before, some guys complain about GM not having any cheaper (if you want to call under $40K cheap), RWD V8 cars. GM finally puts one out, and they still complain. Oh brother!

You don't believe the GTO can get into the 13's? You seem to have missed the biggest automotive mag of all: Road and Track! See for yourself:
R&T Specs (http://www.roadandtrack.com/assets/download/1113200311617.pdf)
Took me all of five minutes to find that on the internet...

wonder what some headers, bigger exhaust pipes with free flowing mufflers and a cold air induction setup would do for those numbers..
i saw one at a dealer around here about a month ago, and the salesman told me that i could drive it out the door for $30,000. if i could swing the payment, i think i'd get me a GTO over a barely optioned 4X4 1/2 ton pickup any day of the week.
if they sell, there's talk of making them here in the USA- which would make it NOT an import- and increasing the production run to however many they can sell, which would probaly bring the price down a bit- can anyone say $25,000 V8 cruiser?

May 6th, 04, 6:57 AM
dream on fellas! if they make them here in the states they will be MORE expensive than they are now, because they'll have to pay the hefty salaries of UAW. i doubt the Aussie workers get paid as much, that's why it's as cheap as it is now. you guys can have them, take 2 if you'd like. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Love the GTO. Hondas are made in america, that means there not an import right? Who cares where its made. Its GM threw and threw and exactly what was needed to help bring GM back from the dead after they killed the f-body IMO.

my only major complaint about it is the somewhat cookie cutter styling. but, I think GM will fix that in the coming years. They really didn't make any huge styling differences to it to badge it as a pontiac. They had lots of other things to worry about this time around.

It would be nice if it was less expensive, but don't we always want that? lol

I had heard months ago, I forget from where, that GM was thinking about bringing over some El Camino versions. I figured it was just hearsay. After seeing that other post with the pics of the ute, maybe there was some truth to that after all.

I agree, why does everything have to be egg shaped. No character at all. Just change the head lights and tail lights and poof new car model.......not

OK, anybody got any bets as to how long the IRS will last??

It does have an IRS, doesn't it??

I guess I just don't get it b/c I want an affordable rear wheel drive coupe that weigh's right at 3100 pounds and seats four although tight in back, with a live axle and a regular, easy to install five speed OD tranny that can handle 600 T, and I'm talking Muncie type, not TKO stuff..

You know, a repop of my good old '67!!

If Ford can do it, then why can't GM??

pdq67

PS., And I don't want any wimpy clutches and rearends that hold up fine as long as it spins!!!

Standard 11" clutch and a 12 bolt or 8.5"...

i fer one love them. i have loved holdens for a few years, and i think the GTO is awesome, even though the front end looks like a grand prix.

last night at like 2am, there was a show on, and they were testing the 04 gto, it is pretty insane, doing like 100+ sidways through turns(on a closed race track). w/ traction control off, that thing sure must be fun.

the only way u can tell the interior is still AU, is the sound knob on the radio, its on the pass side. thats about it.

i LOVE it, and if i werent 16, and i had a bunch of money, i would buy a couple.

aaron I saw that show too, and I have to say I now have a different attitude towards this car. At first, I thought it was a cheap way of making money off of an old name, BUT now...that car really does deserve the name GTO. The dragstrip test was a big joke. A '67 GTO vs the new GTO? The driver of the new GTO played possum for about an 1/8th mile, and then passed that '67 AT WILL- it must have been out 4 or more car lengths at the lights. Pretty darned impressive 13.8 in the 1/4. Those power slides were awesome, the car is just cool. The looks are kinda bland, but, eh... . Paint it Carousel Red, put some new wheels on it (no dubs PLEASE) and see what happens! Yea, its priced high- BUT- I dont think you can meet that kind of performance until you start hitting BMW and BENZ territory though. Looks like the only "realistically" priced American car to take it on is that new hemi (not HEMI tongue.gif ) 300 whatever it is. Even then, its not a 0-60 in about 5 seconds car...

YaaaY GTO graemlins/hurray.gif - I hope the new one's depreciate like a 4th Gen Camaro V8! 13.8, 0-60 in 5.0, powerslides, little more seating room, etc.? for $12000 OR less down the road a few years? Sign me uP!

At least they already have about 5+ years of experience modifying the LS1, no learning curve there! A 100-150hp nitrous shot only will make any LS1 a screamer somewhere in the 11's.
I went to order a new Z28 in the summer of 2002, no options - 6 speed only. I got a price quote of something slightly under $21K with the rebates or whatever GM had going on at the time. Sign me up! Unfortunately I was called in a few days and told orders couldn't be placed anymore because of the line shutting down...bummer.
I bet the GTO's $35K price tag can come down depending on your comfort level.

I too think the GTO will be a mediocre sales success because not too many americans can afford one. In 1967 i went down to buy a new Corvette for 4150 dollars which was about 6 months wages. I've been losing ground ever since and now can't afford anything NEW. The're nice if you can pay for one though.

The yellow GTO at Super Chevy you saw belongs to Tim Lee, owner of Don Lee Automotive (DLA) in Rancho Cucamonga. The car had a 150 shot and ET Streets - that's it. DLA does a lot of late model hot rods (building a 383 LT1 for my '97 Z28 now) including an LS1 swap into a '69 Z28 recently. They are known to work on some fairly fast cars, including the fastest west coast f-body and LS1 strokers that break 9-inch rears on a regular basis. ;)
