What is the effect of going from 1.7 rockers to 1.72's on a 402 with a 280 hydraulic Comp cam ?

I know it will increase the lift on the valve, but what changes would I see in the way the engine performs ?

Thanks !

You won't notice/feel/or experience anything different..on a dyno or at the dragstrip,or seat of the pants.

I agree 100% with Chris, the 1.72 rockers over the 1.70's would never be negligable by you in the car or on the track, don't wast your money/time on that mod.

I am trying to get rid of this ticking I have on a couple of rockers. It is not clacking - it is just a tick but I had the engine destroyed by a cam getting eaten earlier this year and I don't want it to happen again.

Is going to roller rockers worth it ? Are the ones on eBay any good ? Is there an advantage with the aluminum over the steel ones ?

Thanks !

Only if they are regular old CC roller tipped cast steel Magnum rockers just b/c they tend to be more uniform then stock stamped rockers..

years ago i remember reading some dyno results on a bbc that had stock rockers and they replaced them with 1.72 roller tips from comp......they gained like 5 hp and a few lbs of torque..i think most of the gain cam from the rockers just being more equal in lift over the stockers..........

i run the 1.72 rockers i did it for more peace of mind then from a performance stand point......they are stronger then stock and more equal in lift over the stockers.........and maybe if i gained any hp or torque then it would be a plus............i dont think its a waste of money i just see it as an investment to not have to worry about the stockers breaking cause i have had the stock ones break even with a mild cam............

i would say if you got the extra money buy them but dont expect a hp gain just buy them knowing your getting alittle better product then stock............

I don't think there is much performance gain in roller rockers either,if you keep it at or under 6K, the 30 hp claims are slightly exaggerated.

This isn't for a performance gain !

I am trying to get rid of a couple of clicking rockers and I was asking if the rollers would do that.

Tom,I don't think changing the rockers will get rid of your clicking sound..so,save your money.Whatever you do,don't buy cheap roller rockers from China..stick with American made if you really have to have them.IMHO and experience, stamped rockers work just fine.I've owned big blocks for over 16 years, and I've never had a stock rocker fail me.Rollers are over rated for your average street motor with lift less than .575

Tom,
There is no difference whatsoever between 1.70 and 1.72 rocker ratio. The stock rocker spec for GM big block engines is 1.72. Many aftermarket rockers are discribed as 1.70 ratio, probably just for convenience sakes.
Stamped steel rockers work very well in stock and modified engines. Aluminum roller rockers are real pretty but they will not result in any performance gains unless you are running a cam with over .600" lift and turning in excess of 6500 rpm.
Many late model engines are using some sort of roller rocker set-up, but this is generally an effort to reduce internal friction in search of better fuel mileage.
Inspect your rockers very carefully. The typical wear areas are the stem pad, pivot ball and the pushrod cup. If each of these areas look OK, then something else is causing your ticking noise.
Could be that a lobe is going flat.
