: Horsepower TV & ding dong Joe
10secBu Oct 19th, 03, 1:16 PM Anyone catch the episode where Joe is putting a fuel system in their "King Fish" Mopar? First, he screwed up using a WAY OVERKILL dana 60 with an aluminum girdle cover which hit the stock gas tank...his solution was to install a cell. The smarter solution for a street car would have been to stick with an 8 3/4 rear which would have cleared the stock tank which IMO is a more favorable fuel tank for street use (you can keep your spare and trunk space).
Then Joe cuts out the trunk floor and mounts a cell to a piece of 1/8" aluminum sheet metal...with no side-to-side braces to support the weight of the cell. But the biggest mistake was installing the cell with the sump FACING FORWARD   .WTF is the puprose in that??? Geeze...he must like having that electric pump (mechanical block mounted would have been nicer for a street cruiser) suck air as he accelerates and the fuel goes to the rear of the cell.
Man, Chuck leaves the show for one episode and ding dong Joe goes and screws up a Mopar...he should have stuck with his Blue Ovals graemlins/clonk.gif tongue.gif .
Well,I'd still do their job if they doubled my salary... smile.gif

But the biggest mistake was installing the cell with the sump FACING FORWARD I think you need to give him a break, I mean after all, He's a Ferd man, so not only is he used to everything being built all bassackwards, he's got no real concept of the effects of acceleration!! :D :D
coop Oct 19th, 03, 6:59 PM I also noticed the sump facing the wrong way when this show originally aired 6 weeks ago. The first thing I thought was watch they will come back from a commercial and it will be turned the right way. I guess not.
crowenate Oct 19th, 03, 7:41 PM He installed it like that because when the new episodes come out they are turning it in to a rear engine dragster.

BRRRR it's cold in here.
Did anyone notice the sudden drop in temperature :D
Nickel333 Oct 19th, 03, 8:58 PM double post
Nickel333 Oct 19th, 03, 8:59 PM Well and lets not forget the vent is now on the back of the tank so Gasoline WILL be spilling all over the place {hopefully the ground} when he hits a launch and im sure the track wont like his gasoline spilling and cleaning there trackbite off....just a thought.
JUNK YARD DOG Oct 19th, 03, 10:55 PM dang joe work on that probable all day and all you can do is find fault with him .chuck will straiten him out when he gets back besides i thought mopars always ran faster backwards anyways .joe we still like your show anyways we all make a few mistakes now and then
chevellefreak1971 Oct 20th, 03, 1:59 AM Don't know if this will help make sense of it all but found this on the horsepower TV site: (http://www.horsepowertv.com)
Kingfish fuel cell installed backwards? Hey, we’ve taken some heat regarding our show that aired on August 2nd and 3rd (repeats Dec. 13-14). That’s the one where I installed a fuel cell in the trunk of our Project Kingfish and plumbed for fuel delivery. Some of you thought we were crazy or absent-minded when we installed the sump in the FRONT of the Jaz fuel cell. Well, we relied on the experience and advice of some of our Mopar enthusiast friends during the course of the project. And, they insisted that because of the design of the cell, with fuel-absorbing foam inside the tank, the sump would work just fine in the forward position. Plus, you must remember the Cuda is being built for street use only. Our positioning would no doubt be very questionable in race applications.
It also looks like they are getting some heat for cutting up the Nova too.
sheetmetal Oct 20th, 03, 9:56 PM allthough i did not see the show its hard for me to critque. seems im having to do every thing 2 and 3 times on my ride. really gets expensive. "Ignorance is bliss" makes me wounder some times.

Dragn70 Oct 22nd, 03, 7:02 AM If its for street use only, the Dana 60 was a waste of time and a stock tank would work fine.
d1_bradley Oct 22nd, 03, 10:15 AM Yeah, but Marty, all those "sponsers" wouldn't get their name on TV if they just left the stock stuff in there :D Beating this kind of stuff into our heads must work though, look at all those ricers with trash can exhausts and "splash" decals all over that 85HP wonder
Eric68 Oct 22nd, 03, 6:22 PM I missed the sump part, but I did notice what you said about no side bracing. It looked to me like the edge of the hole they cut would cut the fuel cell in half if the car ever got rear ended.
BTW Didn't they start this project by pulling out a perfectly good 440? It can only go down hill from there IMO. Why would anyone ever ditch a perfectly good 440 . . .
Nickel333 Oct 22nd, 03, 6:45 PM Yeah good call Eric, i believe they said it was "too heavy?" And would work great for a drag only car but it wasnt what they wanted for there "King Fish" In other words it was an excuse for them to put a mopar performance crate shortblock in and keep the sponsers happy.
headerfire Oct 22nd, 03, 6:52 PM I always get a kick out of how the parts they install just seem to fall right in place.Bolts slide rite in,vacuum hoses pop rite on, etc.
I wish they would do a "bloopers" edition of that show,,dropping things, spilling oil, cussing, etc graemlins/clonk.gif
427L88 Oct 23rd, 03, 8:39 AM Well then you missed the outakes they show once in a while, and you certainly missed the Mustang 351 conversion which was a complete cluterfutz.
Hey, it's entertainment right, not neccessarily a how to. I know some "back yard" mechanics running 11s with less than 10G in the whole car. They'd spank their 30K+ arses all day long.
But I still like to watch the show.
Rumblin70SS Oct 23rd, 03, 8:42 AM Hey guys, just remember it's a TV show for entertainment. Would you rather watch this or something like "Charmed" with the girlfriend/mistress/wife?
You know which one gets my vote..............lol
Eric68 Oct 23rd, 03, 11:04 AM OK, OK . . . it IS a fun show to watch, but you have to admit it's just as much fun to bust on it . . .
427L88 Oct 23rd, 03, 11:13 AM And I would agree that "busting on them" in a way keeps them honest.
You can't BS this crowd! tongue.gif

It's a pretty good show,& I wish I had a shop like that. graemlins/angry.gif
66chevelless427 Oct 23rd, 03, 1:11 PM it would still be nice to see something actually dirty in the shop. if youve ever watched shade tree mechanic or two guys shop or what ever its called now on speed it more realistic than horsepower tv. Let's seem some actual dirt or grease with some busted knuckles on the show and not in a bloopers.
Todd
headerfire Oct 23rd, 03, 2:25 PM Yeah,,,busted knuckles, car flying off the dyno, timing light dropped into the fan, serious carb fire, and dont forget beer cans all over the bench,
Make it real! graemlins/clonk.gif

Cars with bumps or girls with bumps! :D
I was gonna post on the fuel sump thing but Todd beat me to it smile.gif
dan_cobb Oct 23rd, 03, 11:47 PM I just watched the show last night on Tivo. I was laughing loud enough to cause concern in the next room when I saw how he mounted that tank.
I'd say that wether it is intended for street use or track use, the current setup is UNSAFE, and should not be driven. As soon as it gets sold to someone ignorant, they will try to race it and be sent back to the garage to reconfigure the entire project.
I call the whole thing a waste of an episode. I'd rather have seen the 572 install again!
++++
Keith Tedford Oct 24th, 03, 12:56 AM You could be stuck with Don Franks and his silly getup. He doesn't build anything.
