: What can I expect from a roller cam conversion?
Clyde_Maston Aug 18th, 04, 8:26 PM My 327 desktop dyno'd at 320 HP and 349 TQ with a Lunati 216/228 @ 0.050 cam, performer vortec intake, Holley 650 VS, headers, duals and vortec heads. I'd like to get to 350-375 horses and similar tq values if not 400 hp and TQ. Will a conversion to a roller cam get me there?
Chevy high performance did a build up with a slightly larger cam and ported 2.02/1.60 camel hump heads and made something like 410 hp and 400 tq.
What do i need to get there without starting over from scratch?

Clyde_Maston Aug 18th, 04, 9:01 PM What about a solid cam? I've never run one before. Could I get 400 HP/TQ with a solid?

GRN69CHV Aug 18th, 04, 9:20 PM Tell you right now, you do not need a roller to get 350 - 375HP from a 327. GM did it in 1966 -67. 327, 11.0/1 CR. 2.02/1.60 heads, alum highriser intake w/ 700 Holley.
327/350HP : 222/222 @ .050, .447/.447 114LSA flat tappet hydraulic. I've ran this cam in many motors over the years from a 327/300 10.25/1 motor to a '74 350 L48 motor w.8.5/1 CR. Never let me down. You can go with a more modern version like a Crane CRA113801 278/290, 222/234, .467/.494 on 114LSA, or something like a Comp 270H magnum 270/270, 224/224, .470/.470 would be similiar to the 327/350 but a lot more potent.
327/375 : Solid lifter cam - don't have the exact specs handy, but it is fairly agressive and really needs 11.0/1 and a 4.10 gear to work.
Scott_68_SS Aug 18th, 04, 10:35 PM I think Harold likes the 272/272 solid for that.
onovakind67 Aug 18th, 04, 10:42 PM Our 331" road racing motor made 330 rwhp ( about 385 fwhp ) @ 5900 rpm with a mild 228 degree Comp street roller, SportsmanII heads, 10.5:1 compression, Vic-2V and a 2-bbl carb jetted for 5000 feet. We don't use 'headers and duals', we use a set of 1-5/8" x 40" primaries, 2-1/4" x 20" merge collectors with a 2-1/2" Dr. Gas XCO and full Dyno-Flows in the back. If you pay attention to the small details, like ring sealing, friction, windage, timing, cooling, intake air temp, parasitic losses from pumps and fans, etc. you will get the power you seek. For example, the carb hat we use is worth 8 rwhp, not bad for $10.
Here's a little tuning link:

Clyde_Maston Aug 19th, 04, 6:30 AM The general did it with high compression. I want to stick with pump gas. The best that i can get around here is 93 octane. I can mill my block or heads by another 0.020. But I don't want to do that if it won't run on pump gas. I'm at about 7.8 DCR right now with 9.5 SCR and I'm not sure but if I go up to 11.0 with the cams suggested, I think I'll be in trouble with detonation.

RB69SS396Conv Aug 19th, 04, 7:43 AM That "151" cam DID NOT make 375 HP in those motors, by modern measurement methods. I doubt seriously that it would have made 275 HP, let alone 100 more than that. Every motor I've ever seen with that cam in it, was a total pig; one of those cams that has no leave, never really "turns on", so you think it "pulls forever" because it never really "turns off" either, just sort of trails off into nothing at high RPMs. I would (and have) throw it in the trash if I had one, and maybe toss in a quarter for good measure, just as an offering to the gods.
Seriously, you don't "need" a roller cam for that. It's not a particularly effective use of $750, in that situation. For that amount of money, you'd do better by raising the compression.
I'd say, stick with the cam you've got, it's about right for the application at hand; and have the heads milled a little, maybe .020", to pick up some compression. With a stock-deck block, you're probably at about 9½:1; you could stand to pick up a couple of tenths at least. And use a Perf RPM intake instead of the Performer.
Doug F. Aug 19th, 04, 7:46 AM Do yourself a favor and don't worry about magazine power. Do what onovakind said and pay attention to the details. There's also a lot more than peak HP to an engine. Get components that put the power in the RPM range that you want.
mr 4 speed Aug 19th, 04, 10:40 AM Have you been to the track yet? IMHO and experience,I wouldn't let DD rain on your parade.Forget about HP..do you have an ET goal?
Clyde_Maston Aug 19th, 04, 10:18 PM I have never been to the track and really don't have an ET goal. We have an 1/8th mile track about an hour away. I would like to give it a try at least once to see what she would do. This is the first performance engine that i ever built. The engine is in a 66 malibu convertible so she has a load to carry.
