Hey guys, I got my heads on and have a few issues...Can ya help???

1) The builder says 37degrees for timing. It seems to be at 7 degrees at idle now just to get it running. And anything over 3000rpms it beaks up a little. If i move it to like 4 degrees advanced...its fine. any ideas on what to do?

2)I'm getting a noise from my exhaust. Its sounds IDENTICAL to an exhaust leak. Only its comming from the end of the pipe. One side is louder than the other and it sounds horrible cause it makde me feel there is an exhaust leak. But i cant find any. It sounds like a valve tap in the pipe if you know what i mean. I cant hear anything up by the engine but crackling in the headers from compression. No valve taps, nothing. ANy ideas. Oh yea and it varies with timing. The more advanced the timing gets the more it goes away....retarded...then its there.

3) TRACTION!!! graemlins/hurray.gif
Thanks guys
Ed

advance the timing 36 to 38 total timing .if you have no way to set total timing now at least set the timing to 10 to12 with vacume advance plugged that should smooth it out and help trotle respones

go back through the valve adjustment you may have one to tight just a though anyways .did you try to set the timing up by ear till the motor smooths out.do you have a dial back timing light or a balancer with timing after marker markings or timing tape, could also be a dead plug

could also be an exhaust leak before the muffler. mine popped like that and i had a leak right where the muffler was installed on the pipe, they didn't weld it all the way around, just clamped it and tacked in a few places.....not good. sometimes when you want something done right, you either have to do it yourself, or get a gun and make someone alse do it exactly how you want it done! tongue.gif graemlins/thumbsup.gif graemlins/clonk.gif graemlins/beers.gif

i set it with a normal timing light untill i can get one with the dial. Right now its like 4 or 5 advanced at idle and it sounds like its rough. WHen i advance it, the noise goes away and the car runs much better. I'm getting and off idle stumble right now too. WHen i advance it, the noise and the stumble goes away but i get a 1/4 -1/2 throttle break up. When i get in it full throttle it wont do it. I can hear it more than i can feel it too. I'm going to recheck the valves tonight. Is it best to do it whne its running, and loosen then till it clatters, then tighten it till it stops then 1/8 more? Thanks

1/8 will work but ive always set a hydralic at 1/4 to 1/2 turns down, do it slowly.i also have never had a small block that i didnt have at least 10 degrees of timing on it with vacume advance pluged.check to se if vacume advance is working it could be part of the problem

also check the counter weights on the distribiter and make sure they are free and not rusted up go back and check plug wires and make sure they are right even the best can cross one sometimes that will surely cause a poping
