Hello everyone. I've been entertaining the idea of building a turbo motor for my chevelle and was curious as to if and where are there companies that make like an install kit for that or would i have to fabricate it myself? Thanks guys

The market is getting better for this stuff, but I would expect some pretty involved fabrication.... I would look around on http://www.theturboforums.com/smf/index.php , pretty good info, there is even a gm, sbc, LS1, section in the forums...

Are you looking to do a LS1 style turbo, or a traditional sbc???

Here is pic of my buddys 6.0 turbo, in his 72 :) :)

That's pretty sweet! Got anymore pics? :D I've been tossing around the idea of turboing my Chevelle based on a tradition 383ci :D I've got a virgin 350 block sitting around that I can't wait to start building! ....I just need the funds fist! LoL :D:thumbsup:

I am a little partial to LSX motors, Heres mine.

I would look at all the available headers on the market, see if any will fit. After that there is just alot of parts to bolt on. Very easy!

A header isn't a must. You could make 800HP with a cast iron manifold.

If you do find a "kit", you will pay a lot for it. Turbo location will be different for most any application.

Scotty. Did you coat your headers inside or out? I'm building a 454+cid TT motor this winter (blow through carb) and will be pinging you for some advice if you don't mind. I also like your intercooler. The sloped end-tanks are a nice touch. Does it make you nervous that you might leave the hood pins out one day? ;)

I did not coat the headers at all, I like the raw stainless look. I am going to have the turbine housings coated though.

I left my driveway once around the time I first got it running and started to pull down the street, the hood lifted about 6"! I almost had a heart attack as I locked up the brakes. Boy did I feel stupid, last time I will EVER do that again.:)

That's one BEAUTIFUL motor you got there Scotty! If I had the money for an LS series motor (I'd definatly go with an LS2 :D ), I would definatly do what you did. How much "extra" did you pay for tuning? Or do you have a dyno and did all the computer programing yourself?

I tune alot of cars, I enjoy it, I tuned mine all myself. 1000 hp on 93 all day long!

If you ever have tuning questions, let me know!

Well, when the time comes and I do go ahead with a turbo set up, I'll definatly have a lot of Q's to ask, but I'll be going with a blow thru carb set up. Now if I was rich, then I'd DEFINTALY go fuel injected! :D Only bad part, carb or FI, 91 octane is the norm over here in Cali :( I do know of at least 2 76 gas stations that do have 100 octane, but they're not exactly all that close to me :(

One tuning suggestion you may want to consider ( FYI, I ran a twin turbo modified L88 427 in a Chevelle once upon a wayback)

When you build your engine, don't use a stock cam, and don't use so called "performance cams" designed for naturally aspirated situations. Check into special turbo-friendly camshaft profiles. They make a very great difference in performance.

I don't know if they still handle the product, but Iskederian used to make a turbo specific cam for the SBC and BBC. Isky called it a "turbo-cycle camshaft". It has vastly different timing than your typical naturally aspirated cam. The cam profile was specifically designed to take advantage of the turbocharger's natural strengths and weaknesses. Turbos don't do well with long overlaps. In fact, as I recall, the turbo cycle cam has zero overlap and zero lead on the intake valve timing. Way different than your typically rumpty rump racer boy wannabe cam.

Anyway, I ran that turbo-cycle on the street for two years. The improvement in boost was unbelievable (my 427 went from making about about 8 pounds boost at 6600 RPM to 28 pounds boost at the same engine RPM, plus there was a tremendous gain in low RPM no-boost performance as well.) It was money well spent, and the sound of those dual Rayjay turbos really whining was something to hear!

BTW, mine was a blow through the carb setup as well.

cheers,
