I've got a 12-bolt that I just opened up and the gears look pretty good inside. I have to take the axles out to change it to a disc brake setup. I've never worked on a rear-end before and I'm not sure if it is within my capabilities. Also, is there a trick to getting the axles out? I didn't see any c-clips like I expected but I didn't dig into it at all.

Thanks, Mike

For what you want to do is not hard. Look at the carrier unit the the ring gear bolts to and you will see a 1" pin that goes through. You will see a I think 3/8 or 7/16" bolt head, I forget. This is the bolt that retains this pin. After you get out the bolt, the pin should be able to be pushed out of the carrier. Once this pin is out go back out to the axle flange and push it into the housing. Now go back under the car and look inside the carrier and you will see the c-clip on the end of the axle. Remove it and pull the axle out of the housing. I hope this makes sense, hopefully somone else has an easier or more understandable description.

No, your answer made sense. Went out and looked at it and saw exactly what you said. I appreciate the help. Mike

Be careful about rolling the rear end (or drive shaft) once the pin is out! You'll have h#ll lining it all backup to put the pin back in if the side gears come out.
