: Side Pipes
bluechevelless Oct 8th, 04, 5:49 PM I didnt know where to post this so I just landed here...
What do you guys think of side pipes? How do you guys think they would they look on a 1970 chevelle ss, good or bad?
thunderstruck507 Oct 8th, 04, 5:50 PM Not a fan of them on chevelle's but I like them on Mako style Corvettes and some other cars.
Havent seen many chevelles with them, if I saw some pics I could be swayed...
Jughead Oct 9th, 04, 9:09 AM I like them on Vette's. Especially BB's.

I did see a couple Gen1 Camaro's that looked ok. Don't think I'd like them on a Chevelle. Wasn't there a early '70's El that offered them as stock? Maybe 73-74?
Rick Bandy Oct 9th, 04, 9:16 AM Just this week a friend of mine installed new chrome headers and side pipes on his 68 427 Corvette and it looks awesome. He paid alot IMO $1800. 2 1/8 primaries ending with 4 inch side pipes. I have seen them on Chevelles years ago and to each his own, but I would never do it.
BowtieAaron Oct 9th, 04, 5:50 PM i have built models with them, and i think they look awesome. my uncle had a 69 L-88 vette that had side pipes on it, it was sweet.
i say do it.
aaron
Johnny B. Oct 9th, 04, 6:19 PM Had them on my 69 when I bought it. Couldn't
wait to get them off.
Yep, a "Dukes of Hazards Chevelle" if I ever
saw one.
$200.00 will buy them !
bluechevelless Oct 9th, 04, 10:07 PM Ive seen them on a picture of a chevelle thats been floating around but its got some weird air dam that all your attention goes to and you cant seem to see how it would look with just them. My dad used to have them on his 69 camaro but took them off and sold them. I dont really know why tho.
onovakind67 Oct 10th, 04, 12:24 AM I had a racing friend from Canada who dynoed his Vette with sidepipes and experienced a 100 hp loss with the insertion of the mufflers. He ended up with an under chassis system.
Johnny B. Oct 10th, 04, 8:48 PM bluechevelless,
You know you may be on to something about
that Chevelle with a weird air dam. My car
also had that fiberglass air dam along with
the side pipes when I bought it. The guy I
bought it from owned it here in Pa for 28
years. It also had some huge springs on the
back ( 17 inches installed height ) of
which I promptly removed and put on station
wgn springs.
That picture floating around wouldn't happen
to be a blue 69 would it ?
OBTW, that valance /spoiler is fiberglass and
attaches to the bottom of the bumper. He told
me he bought it from Whitney 25 years ago.
You know whats amazing ? That valance acts as
a huge air dam. On my car in the dead of Summer
I was hard pressed to go over 160 when rolling
even at low speed. The damn thing works!
It doesn't look that bad either. I may just
leave it on. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Man thats a hot looking Corvette. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
I like side pipes on Corvettes, and Cobras, thats about it.
My Mom once burnt her leg on my uncle's 63 Corvette, with Hooker Show Tubes, it took months to heal.
hoffbug Oct 10th, 04, 9:17 PM AHH good ol' ankle burners..
They were all the rage in the 70's. I think our local parts store had a roll of flexpipe on hand for years. Everyone had to replace it every spring :D
Unless your going with some kind of retro look I wouldnt run them.

My Mom once burnt her leg on my uncle's 63 Corvette, with Hooker Show Tubes, it took months to heal. Thanks, I've only had my BB running about 1 week now with the side exhaust. These are factory 1969 originals and they are surprisingly cool even after a run down the road.
454VETTE Oct 11th, 04, 9:49 AM Sidepipes are great, but they don’t really lend themselves well (style-wise IMHO) to chevelles. Plus cops will look the other way at corvettes and such that offered factory sidepipes, but be much more likely to write you up for illegal exhaust on a Chevelle. I have a set of Hooker sidepipes on my 74 454 corvette, and plan on installing another set on my 69 427 corvette. I will say one thing about the sidetubes- Hooker offers 2 different style muffler inserts- muffler or glasspack- both slide inside the side tubes. When I first bought the pipes for the 454 car, I bought the mufflers. The muffler’s flow was very restrictive, and made the car very quiet and definitely lost power. I promptly returned them and opted for the glasspacks. I would highly recommend anyone purchase the glasspack insert instead. The plus factor is removing the glasspack insert altogether and running open sidetubes. Just like open headers with 48” long 4” collectors attached…Oh- and you only roast your leg once good before you become the wiser to entry and egress methods…
