My 72 overheated yesterday. The cause was the alternator/fan belt came off. Unfortunately I didn't catch it until the car started sputtering. I looked down at the temp gauge and it was almost pegged. I probably drove it a couple of miles that way. :(

I know I need to replace the belt and add more coolant but is there anything else I should do or look for before I try to fire it up?

Thanks.

Replacing the belt and fluids is probably all it needs but check your oil for water and watch for white smoke in the exhaust.

I am not a mechanic. I would definitly check your oil to make sure it does not look "milky". Running a high temp like that is a sure way to blow your headgasket.

What they said, plus I would change the oil.

I always change the oil after an "incident" It just makes sense.
