I REALLY want the AFR CNC's... but they are a bit outta my pricerange.
Soo... what is the better deal? I have heard that the Canfields are the most underrated head on the market. I have also heard that the Dart's are an excellent head.

What would be better for my 489?
489ci
Lunati Solid Roller 292/300 260/268 .685/.685 108 102
10.5:1 Compression
Victor Jr and Holley HP 950

And bang for the buck value? :D

Well take a look at my ETs in my sig.

Thats for a:
454 +.030
11.5:1 compression
1050HP carburetor
Merlin Single Plane intake
Dart 310cc Heads (not CNC)
Comp Cams Extreme Solid Roller XR292R
.660"/.666" lift 292/298 and 254/260 @ .050

in a 3700# chevelle
4.33 gear
8" converter
leaving on a foot brake at 1800rpm

While I will tell you that "there is more than one way to skin a cat"...this is what works for me, and I have received a lot of compliments that I can get my chevelle to run that quick with what I have.

Any questions let me know (email or the board here, I would be glad to help you any way you decide to go, whether it be AFR, DART or any others)

well Dart makes a 320cc CNC head as well, but my Dart heads are the 310cc non cncright out of the box, with the exception of port matching the intake to the heads...
Thanks :D

Anything else, let me know

Nice to read those numbers Mike.
I'm using XR292R with 498 inches and the AFR305 CNC chamber heads.
Going in a 3500lb Nova that I hope to go around 10.3 with.

BTW jason, what is the price for the Darts or Canfield? My AFR's were approx $2300.

Dart Heads 310cc Dual Spring (same as the ones I use) (http://www.flatlanderracing.com/dartpro1bb.html)
$1079 each

BTW...I bought mine from Summitracing, gave them a webpage like that one above, and they matched the price for me. Mine were a little cheaper when I bought them 2.5 years ago, but did the same kind of thing.

BTW...since I bought mine complete, I paid my machinist $40 to take them all apart and check clearences and spring pressures...my springs came in at 205# closed and 555# @ .660lift

69_chevelle, did you have a machinest assemble the heads bare, or did you purchase the heads from dart assembled?

I purchased them complete, had my machinist take them apart to check clearences and spring pressures, and then he put them back together..no problems.

I had heard that buying them complete is not always suggested, but I did, and then spent $40 to have them looked over to make sure everything was ok.

I can't say which is the better deal, but I will share with you my experience with the Canfield heads.

Here's my combo:

66' Chevelle 3,760lb race weight
454 .030
10.37:1 static compression
Canfield 310cc heads with minimal port work (clean-up)
Comp Cams XR-286 .655/.660 248/254@.050 108LSA
950HP carburetor
Dart oval/rect single plane
TH-400
8" ATI Treemaster MRT converter (stalls to 5k)
4.10 rear
2" Hooker Super Comp headers
Flowmaster merge collectors
3" Straightline Performance mufflers
3" Torque Tech exhaust all the way out the rear of the car
28x10.5 ET Drags rear
28"x4.5" skinnys up front

Always footbraked. Typical launch RPM is 1,600-1,900 depending on conditions/desired RT

Best ET to date is in signature. That pass was made in +1,700' air with 93 octane Shell gas.

The bare Canfield 310cc castings can be purchased from Competition Products for $1,099 a pair. Quality valves will run about $16ea. You will need a good set of springs that will run anywhere from $150-$400 depending on how agressive a cam you will be running. A good set of titanium retainers can be had for ~$140. Then you will need spring cups, valve seals, retainers, etc... If you pay someone to set them up and get a quality valve job you'll prolly spend $200-$250. You could put together a set of Canfield heads with quality parts for ~$1,800-$2,000.

69_chevelle good stuff. kjet, I'm with you buddy, I've got a set of canfields myself. My machinest doesn't like darts. I bought the castings bare and had manly severe duty valves instaled, which were recomended. Also had some port and polish work done to them. Hopefully, I'll get this thing on the track this spring. My engine is based on a 502 bored .30 with plates. I use ross 13:1 custom pistons. I went custom so I wouldn't have to deck to block. The pin height is .020 higher, and it didn't cost much. I switched out the rods to callies racemaster rods and kept the stock crank. My cam is a 50299LUN, which is .660 lift 256/264 at .050 with 108 lobe sep, and instaled at 104.5. I use a eldebrock victor intake(more like a tunnel ram), and a 850 double pumper demon. The trans is a jerico 4 speed. All I need is new axles and c-clip eliminator kit, wheels and tires, and I'm off to the track. My engine builder is drag radial hero Paul Klyczek.

I might have gone with a little more lift on the cam, but I'm sure it will make gobs of power. Jerico 4 speed? Cool! What kind of car is all this going in?

A 71 chevelle that looks like ass(I still love it though). I choose the cam with the intension of swapping out the 502/502 cam. After that everything else started going downhill in a good way. As I went to install the valvespring, I discovered they wouldn't fit, so off came the heads. Paul(my engine builder)had a guy who wanted the eldebrocks for his boat and would buy them for about 100 dollars less than list, and Paul felt the heads would stall at about 6000 rpm and suggested the canfields, so I did the swap. Anyway, with the canfields my compression would have been 7:1 or so so out went the pistons, and since they were out in went the new rods too. The transmission is awesome, absolutely awesome. I missed my budget because of the fuel system, which was allot more than I thought it would be. Its an aeromotive 350 gph pump, regulator, and triangle engineering tank.

Bought Canfields from Competition products.

Bare with 11/32 guides.

Added their valves (exxellent quality, bend, not break)
VTO retainers
ARP Studs and Head studs. ( longer than stock)
Congo rollers.
Guideplates etc.

1710$ total. Then i let my machinist assemble them. Thats for sure will be the best way supporting local guys and knowing its a 100% good job.

Ran XR292R cam too. Works great. Dont 60:e like you guys. 1.45 best with 3500 stall 10"

But ran 9,96/218km/h in 3200lbs car with 17/33" slicks.

With N20, wow. 8.88 ;)

I like the Darts personally of the two, but Canfields are a good head as well and have some really fast cars out there. To be truthful I don't think you can go wrong with a BBC head from AFR, Brodix, Canfield, or Dart with minor work.

I got a hell of a deal on some Brodix BB2's. Motor should be dynoing in late winter/early spring so we will see how they do.
