I was looking at the rear lights on our 1965 El Camino. The upper socket is a dual filament bulb, the lower socket is empty. Is that right? I know in '65 the back up lights were in that location. I guess it just looks odd. Has anyone re-wired a tailight to that socket?

Bruce,
I have copied your question to the Electircal and Wiring forum. Be sure to check there as well.

My 65 wagon has the lights in the bumper for backup. are you sure they belong in the taillight?

64's had single taillight on top of single reverse light on each side with separate lenses for each. 65's had two stacked taillights(one lens) on each side with reverse lights located in the bumper, just outside the license plate lights, unless they had the reverse light delete option. This includes wagons and El Caminos. Hope this helps. 64elkynss

Thanks. The backup lights are in the bumper, and it sounds like I need a bulb in the lower half and I'll have more taillights. I'll check it out, see if that is how they are wired.
Heading out to Hot August Nights, so I'll check it when I get back. Thanks again.

Yes, the lower socket is a low-wattage "taillight only" bulb on 65's.
