: Limitation of steel wheels at the track
I run my slicks on an old set of 15x8 steel rallyes at the track. What is the limit I can go with a 60 degree conical seat lug, steel rim? The aluminum wheels like a Pro Star have that thick center section and use a shank style for strength. Just wondering how much abuse my "old school" design can take. I use 1/2" studs in the rear also. I never thought about it before, but the shear pressure has to be greater with a conical style than a shank style.
bracketchev1221 Aug 7th, 07, 7:36 AM Jim I don't remember how to post it, but I'll show you that picture of my father's 4000 chevelle wagon. It went 11.30's with 15x8 rallys on the back with 1/2" studs. And that was a 427 4 speed car. It never had a wheel problem, only axles.
I do recall seeing that picture before. Wheels up wagon. You had posted it a while ago in another topic. Very cool picture, very nostalgic.
Good to know that a heavy car with steel wheels and 1/2" studs could run low 11's without an issue.

Damn, New York National...Never got to go there, too young. I can only listen to stories from my dad and he sais it was the best track ever...
bracketchev1221 Aug 7th, 07, 11:14 AM I think I was 5 or 6 when that picture was taken. I remember standing next to the guy taking the picture, it was my neighbor. That was the last day National was open.
Well, I fell better about that now.
Jim (540Hotrod), what tires are you using on the back of that Vette?
DieselEater Aug 7th, 07, 10:37 PM FWIW......I've personally removed the shank style lugs from my aluminum slots, and found cracks and such on all of them. I had to replace them all at $1.60 each!!!!! I think the steel set up is much stronger. Look at one of those shank style lugs next chance you get and see just how much steel is actually holding your rim on!!!

How did you do Sunday Jim???
Ummmm....I've had better days. But getting a ride out to the track in a 26' enclosed trailer sure was nice!!

forcd ind Aug 8th, 07, 6:14 AM i used the large nascar lugs on steel wheels, figured if they can run over 200 mph on a curve, my crap will be ok-neat pic of the wagon
540Hotrod Aug 8th, 07, 9:29 AM I've got M/T 10.5x28's with stiff sidewalls. Using 16 psi that day.

You should come down to Maple Grove to our next outing. :)
I have seen any number of Mustangs run 11's with the stock 4 lug rims and stock lugnuts, so a Chevelle with stock rims and 5 lugs should be fine. Mine's (Mustang) only in the 12's, on stock axles, 4 lug, 7.5 in rear, and launched on spray. Yehaw! As soon as I get time, the Chevelle will be faster too!
Most of the lug nut failures I have seen come from them not being tightened. They will take a lot of shear, but not much in bending, where they can fatigue also.
