: Big tune-up

Thinking soon I should attempt to re-curve my distributor (Accel HEI) and then re-jet and tun my carb. When you're doing a 'big' tune like this, do you still follow the standard getting the ignition/timing THEN tune the carb, or kind of do both at the same time, tinker with carb some, then mess with new weights, etc. Since this is my basically stock 350 with a Q-jet on top, I'll be tuning for mileage. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you still tune the timing as best you can. The experienced guys will tell you how much mechanical will run rite for a mileage motor. I know that if you can get it to run something like 50 degrees advance (base+mechanical+ vacuum) without any ping/detonation problems, you'll get really good mileage. But I've always heard to get the timing curve right first, then mess with the carb.
