After a minor booboo, crossing 5&7, she came to life,no leaks, don't overheat and holds great oil pressure, and will flat set you back in the seat, even when cruising about 60, pulls strong above 3000, Its gonna have to hook to get the 10 second timeslip, but definately has the former best of 11.78 beat :D

Feb.6 is when the 1/4 mile track opens and I'll be there, weather permitting :D ,still have axles and c clip eliminators to get in the car,but that shouldnt take but a good day at a leisurely pace. The rollbar too,if its not in by then,I'll still make at least one pass.

I drove it to town tonight, not much different than the other motor, just alot more choppy idle, brakes worked fine,no problems. I'm going to lash the valves again tomorrow and hope for good weather in about 5 weeks :D

Yes,I've been running C clips,I also have rear disc brakes and was hoping they would help if I ever had problems, which I never did, except when I broke the stock carrier a couple years ago. I've got a new set of Moser axles, rear end support cover and a transmission shield(for the th400 when it goes back in) sitting over there on the floor.

Sounds like you should be able to run high 10s or better now. The gearing is about perfect for that engine. My son just went back to 3.50 gears in the 9" Ford rear in his car and said it feels much better, ran a 9.40 something car that was bugging him on New Years eve and beat him like a red headed stepchild from reports that are filtering back. There is a movie clip of the final round at Mo-Kan that you might enjoy that just got posted by 505Nova over on the MAKO Ten Five Board. We should be able to run with all the big dogs at the shootout races this year. The Feb. 5th date is for Ozark, right?

Jan 2nd, 05, 12:45 PM
Harold, its Feb.6th opening day at Mo-Kan they just posted their schedule for the coming year at www.mokandragway.com (http://www.mokandragway.com) ,looks to be several MAKO 10.5 races also. Ozark does not open until March, they do not have a schedule posted as yet,you can monitor that at www.ozarkdragstrip.com (http://www.ozarkdragstrip.com) ,they just put up a new message board and I don't like it...the colors clash, gray and red :(

Bob,
How did that pan fit? I am ordering the same pan and pickup that you are using.
What was the part number of that Melling pump and spring??

Bob West
Jan 2nd, 05, 2:57 PM
The pan was tight getting in the car with the transmission still in the car,but we were able to get it in there by jacking up the trans as high as it would go,other than that it was pretty straight forward,I installed the starter before I put the passenger side header on,the driver side header also slid in easily with the car jacked up about a foot and half, the oil filter had to be twisted and turned to get in,but all in all with the increase compacity it dropped in easily. He used the Melling M77 oil pump w/corvette spring, not sure on the part number for the corvette spring? any help on this one?

Be sure to check the cover end play, it won't make much difference with full pressure but is a big deal at lower rpm's.
.001-.0015 is a pretty good number.

Hi Robert, Mo-Kan opening date is Feb.6th, thats great, if the weather co-operates. Hope your brakes are up to stopping the new higher powered car. My son said his new disc brakes faded out the other day at the end of the street race at who knows what speed when he laid down on them hard. Now maybe he'll put the rear discs on like i asked him to. He luckily had a long shutdown area so no real problems getting stopped. Glad thats over and hope TRP opens soon.

I do have 4 wheel discs Harold, I can stop from a 113mph pass and hit the first turnoff if I want to,its a whole lot easier to let off and turn on the radio :D I know it will be a whole new ball game at 120+

Hi Robert, My son hasn't had any problems getting the car stopped at the strip even at speeds of 148 but he really doesn't know how fast he was traveling as his attention was focused on keeping it straight. With the new gear and the #6 nitrous line he said it was skating in high gear and running better than ever. (Over 7200 RPM with 3.50 gear out back). No telling how fast it was going, probably 155+. I sure hope the strip opens soon. I know that Mo-Kan doesn't have much shutdown area so the promoters only run the eighth mile length race there. My son's Chevelle has run over 120 on the eighth mile and i'm expecting 123+ this coming season.

Bob West

 he's running in the 1/8th what I hope to be running in the 1/4 mile.

Harold Sutton
Jan 4th, 05, 4:15 PM
Hi Robert, We have had occasion to run both the eighth and quarter mile lenght races. Before the last gear change he had a best of 5.79 on the eighth and 9.23 on the quarter with the # 4 line. However the N2O wasn't doing too much with the small line. I feel the larger line will take about 2-3 tenths off of the quarter mile times if the N2O works right. It seems to lay over at about 145-146 MPH when the small line is used and he beat everyone at the Mo-Kan eighth mile race while only running 116.6 MPH. At Tulsa on a TNT night the car ran over 120 MPH at the eighth after kicking in the nitrous at the top of first gear. If we ever get the juice right should easily go high eights. Juice makes them fly when it works right. I think your motor only car should be able to run 10.70s at 3800 pounds. We have a local here with an identical setup and weight and 4.10 gears and it has run mid 10.7s @ 124 MPH. Good luck with your new motor combo.

Robert, Do you think the oval ports will be holding you back any at this point? Or better torque out of them. I keep reading build ups and it seems like they ditch them in favor of 320 cfm or so rectangular heads.

I'm an oval port fan. How streetable is that cam? Sounds nasty. smile.gif Keep us posted to you track times.

Bob West
Jan 5th, 05, 9:01 PM
I don't think they'll be holding me back with a 62-6400 shift point, its all built for torque with the smallish headers, dual plane intake thru the exhaust. Hoping to make the track Feb.6th,weather permitting and will post what happens. As far as the cam goes,,,the power brakes work fine, real choppy idle compared to my old style rumpity rump cam, and comes to life at 3000 rpm :D I've never run a roller before, has a little more valve train noise than I care to listen too,if I get my 10.99 it won't bother me anymore.

Ron454
Jan 6th, 05, 2:55 AM
Hey Robert,
I built my Nova to go tens. It took me 4 months to finally hit a good air and a good track day to do it. I ran a 10.98.......
All my internet buddies (Dragnet...now defunct) reminded me that a ten is a ten is a ten! Cracked me up.
So just remember, a ten is a ten is a ten! And you will be there.
And we will know.
Is it done snowing yet?
Well, we don't get much snow in Oregone,,,,
Ron

Bob West
Jan 6th, 05, 7:44 AM
the snow missed us down here in southwest,Mo., we've had two days of rain, about 5" or rain and right now its 16*,back in the 60's this weekend. As mild as my other combo was, this one should have it in the bag, but as you know,to go faster from this point on,the power requirements go up 3 fold, especially with a heavy car. We'll "get 'er done" :D

That's gotta be one heckuva rapid transit buggy!

This is going to be fun to watch - I mean once you get this motor dialed in, it'll go into your son's Camaro and then what, 632!!!

Livin' up to your name!

Hey, hope you get many seasons out of this build. And remember what happened to Baird when his 540 did its shakedowns, so don't freak out if it doesn't do exactly what you think it should right "out of the box".

My AZZDyno estimates the stars will line up and the new mill shaves near 1.00 off!

GIVE'ER HELL! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Harold Sutton
Jan 7th, 05, 3:47 PM
I agree with 427L88, it should be about one second quicker and run about 124 MPH. I hope you get to come to one of the shootout races this year. The ones at Mo-Kan will also have a bracket race included i think.

Bob West
Jan 7th, 05, 8:05 PM
Harold,I'm thinking about opting out of points this year just to get it dialed in and go to some of the races that you can't do because of "the points deal" I like hanging with the street guys, going to MoKan also. I'm sure I'll finally get to meet up with you there sometime this year. Thanks Gene, thats what I'm hoping for :D

Digging up an old post.....

Hey Bob, how is the motor holding up? Any changes since you last post in this topic?

Also what RPM are you shifting at and what RPM through the traps?

This motor has really got me re-thinking in the strength of cast stroker cranks....

Bob West
May 4th, 07, 7:09 AM
I put 450 passes on the motor as originally built. It was freshened this last winter as I had issues with the thrust, had it welded up (flange) and crank was turned .010 under and its back at it again. Scat LW profiled cast crank, Eagle I beam rods. I started out running a best of 11.00 in its original configuration with 781's, went from a 10" ATI converter to the ATI 8" MRT thats in it now, added brodix racerite ovals, and suspension work, got it down to 1.402-10.40@125 last year. This past freshen included decking the block .010 (zero decked), taking .010 off the heads and adding more cam, also had to sleeve #3, had a pin hole in the bottom of the cylinder. My best pass this year has been 10.39@116mph, lifting because I didnt know the 1/4 mile timers were on at the local 1000ft track. My best 60ft has been 1.376 in Centerville,Ark, best mph of 126.77 at Tulsa just a couple weeks ago in less than favorable weather conditions, hot and a crosswind. The bottom end has held up fine, for a cast crank and the weekly pounding that I put on it. Still running a Edel. Perf Rpm intake too with a 2" open spacer on top.

Cable
May 4th, 07, 10:33 AM
Awesome combo regardless. I seriously thinking of a similar combo, except sticking with 049 large ovals w/2.25-2.30" intake valves and 1.88-1.90-1.94" exhaust valves (whatever the largest I can fit in them) along with a decent port & polish job. I will also very likely stick with a solid flat tappet cam too, prob a large UltraDyne grind (maybe the .612/.630).

I gotta say I am suprised that you have stuck with the RPM, I would of thought you'd go to a Vic Jr. with the cubes and revs your dealing with. I wonder if my car would benefit more with a Vic Jr. being that my car only weighs 2800 lbs. with me and the current iron 454 up front (I still have a 52/48 weight balance too). My current 454 has the RPM air-gap up top.

I hate to ask again, but RPM are you shifting at? Trap RPM at 1320'?

Is Mokan now just an 1/8 mile track or is the 1/8 just for certain classes. I used to race there a lot but havent been back in a long time.

Bob West
May 4th, 07, 11:14 AM
Mokan is still 1/4 mile, but they run their CDRA races 1/8th mile only. I run at www.ozarkdragstrip.com in their No/E points series.

Bob West
May 4th, 07, 11:18 AM
I shift at 6k, with 4.10's and 30" (92.5 rollout) slicks I'm trapping 63-6400 in the 1/4 mile. I did try a Vic Jr twice BEFORE I swapped the heads and both times I lost 60ft, e.t. and gained slight mph. It dont run to bad for 10.6-1 comp. @ 3860 lbs, I like being able to fill up with 93 octane on the way to the track. I'm hoping for 10.29 this fall.

Driving to KCIR with 342 gears and t 400 the car ran a best of 10.72 @ 130 on pump gas and drag radials. Unfortunately he died in feb of 2001 and the car has set in his widows garage ever since.
