I have a 72 SS, heres the problem, I just installed a set of electric fans, I used a sender from a 92 Z28 and it will no kick the fans on, I have to groung the wire and then it kicks on, So for now I just ran them on all the time. But also my amp guage will work then will just point straight down. Then after a few min will just kick right back up. What am I over looking. Maybe a ground problem? Rob

Rob,

It sounds like to me that your amp gauge is reacting to the fans. The fans are cycling and the amp gauge is reflecting the on and off of those fans. I can't help you with the wiring of your fans as I'm not familiar with the wiring, but, someone will chime in and get you fixed up.

How did you wire the fans, and where are you getting power from? Your problem is most like caused by the amp gauge circuit getting ground somewhere, or the battery charge wire becoming open, which is overloading the amp gauge. (That circuit should never be grounded) The amp gauge connects to two hot (battery positive) points, one is at the starter BAT terminal, the other is at main junction near the firewall. The amp gauge is protected by fusible links at both hot points. Check all of you connections, especially the fans (I assume you didn't have this problem before adding the fans). Continuing to let the amp gauge work like this may melt the copper traces on PCB board, as they will melt before the the fusible links will ever blow.
