I have a chance to get a 272 H 12 from a guy that is new in box. I had a few questions, the cam is for a mild 350 ( possible 383 but doubtful right now) that I am rebuilding in school. The bottom end will be new pistons around 9:1 but the rest of the bottom end will just be reconditioned. Heads for the mean time will be cleaned up crap 70 smog heads wtih 76cc. Intake will be performer RPM with performer 750 on top. 1 5/8's headers to 2.5" system with x pipe. Right now its just a stock converter, th-350, and peg leg 10 bolt 2.73. I do plan on upgrading the heads, converter, trany, and rear end ( 12 bolt 3.73) when I get the time and money. For now though its just the plan jain set up.

So how will that cam work with my current set up and after I start upgrading?

From the info I receved the cam is
UD sb272 cam specs:
Duration at seat: 272/272
Lobe Separation: 110 ( owner got the 110 insted of 112)
Valve Lift: .454 / .454
Duration at .050": 217/217
Power Range: from IDLE to 5500
The old UD website had this on this cam: Our most popular hydraulic profile. Slight lope 600 RPM idle and 17" vacumm. Works with stock parts and all power accessories.

MalibuMan 400,

The 1st cam that I put in one of our personal cars was the 272H12, in my wife's 77 Nova. I got a TargetMaster 350(355), put the cam in on 106° ATDC with a Cloyes True roller. I used a Performer(before the days of Performer RPM, etc), a Carter 625 AFB, and some 1 5/8" BlackJack headers. On a very conservative dyno this combo made 298 ftlbs at 2000, 341 ftlbs at 4000, and 300 ftlbs at 5400, a 43 ftlb variation over 3400 RPM. Peak power was 310 at 5200, but it still made 296 about 6000. It idled at 600 with 17" of vacuum, and idled smoothly in gear with the A/C on and my foot off the pedal. It also gave 17 MPG going from Memphis to Indy and back.
We liked it very much......

PS---On Westech's dyno that 310 would be about 360-370......

Thank you Harold, what springs would you recomend?

MalibuMan 400,

We used the springs that came with the TargetMaster heads, but a good aftermarket spring of stock diameter is the Lunati 73943, with about 108 lbs at 1.75, and about 310 at max lift. This is AS MUCH spring as needed, any more pressure will be of no benefit. We have run it with 90 lbs seat and 280 open. At least 50% of the users since 1982 have just used stock or stock-replacement springs.
