: Going to the dyno--tuning tips?

My friend and I are heading to a local chassis dyno next week, just for the fun of it. It's $35 for 3 pulls, and one pull is your base line pull and the other two test your A/F ratio with a tail-pipe sniffer. I've got a Q-jet on my engine and was wondering how I can tell and know when and how much to adjust my mixture screws? I really wasn't planning on and don't have time to change jetting (if I took that long I'd have to rent the dyno for a few hours, their policy), but maybe dropping in some new secondary rods. Can anyone shoot me some tuning tips though? Thanks.

Before you go to the dyno shop, make sure you have everything in your engine up to snuff. Fresh oil, tranny's full, no water leaks, etc. We've seen 60 hp gains from plug changes, so as fresh set won't hurt. We've had guys run out of gas, also, so make sure you have plenty of the right gas. Make sure your tires are aired up, lug nuts are on and tight and no rear hubcaps.
Mark your balancer at 36° BTDC to help with the timing adjustment. Make sure you have full throttle travel. Have someone watch the engine during the first pass to see if the air valve is opening sufficiently and that the fuel pressure remains sufficient. Q-jets will operate just fine on 3-4# of fuel pressure. The major gain you can make with a Q-jet is with the secondary rods. The dyno test will tell you which way to go as far as mixture.

Try adjusting timing 2 degrees either way this can usually make 10 to 20 hp.
