: What Type of Plug/Gap w/Crane Ignition?

Hey guys, I just finished installing my Crane HI-6 ignition on my '86 K5 Blazer (Hoping for better mpg).

I didn't really notice any power gains on the quick test drive tonight after the install, but the throttle response is much better of idle. I am currently building a mild 383 with '71 LT-1 heads, headers, mild hyd cam, Performer intake, and a tricked out Q-Jet. The new engine should take the full benefit of the Crane ignition while still passing SMOG.

Anyway, the dist is a large coil-in-cap type w/o vacuum advance (computer controlled). I am still running the stock GM coil, although I plan on a 50K volt aftermarket coil really soon.

The engine is a stock 350 w/100k on it. I am currently running Bosch platinum +1 plugs. Tonight some of my 4x4 buddies are telling me that Bosch platinum's don't like aftermarket ignitions like Crane and MSD. Something about the aftermarket ignitions killing the plugs themselves.

I trust these guys, but I am not sure if I believe they know what they are talking about.

Have you guys heard anything like this before? What type of plug some I use with the Crane HI-6 ignition? What gap should I set them at? A Crane tech said that gaping them to .060" would yield better mileage and power, but less plug life. I normally run plain-Jane A/C plugs, but these were on special or something when I bought them.

Thanks guys.

i know for my msd 6al box it says to use regular ol' plugs in the destruction manual.but thats not a crane may not hold true with yours.

I like Bosch Platinum plugs but not for a hi-perf Chevy engine. Platinums are for long duration between plug changes. Not suppose to change gaps on them after run. I use NGK V series plugs, Champions, AC's, Autolites etc. for V8's! Gap those plugs at 60 at your own risk! Think I would start a little lower than that like say 45, see how that runs, then increase till power falls off. Plugs wires must be in top condition to handle that kind of gap but it is done! Goodluck!

I have had the HI-6 in my car for about five years. I was running the Bosch Platinums for a while. They worked good but I now run the NGK V series plugs as well. I gap evrything at .045 -> .060 is too much for a higher compression engine even with a high voltage coil IMO. I run MSD superconductor wires and a refitted HEI with the Crane. I really like the fact you can change the rev limiter setting without using the expensive plug-in chips that MSD sells. I have used their stuff as well and installed it in a few cars I have worked on - I just prefer the simplicity of being able to dial the limit you want.
