my 468 needs some help to save the starter with a locked out dist. and 13.5 to 1 compression.

right now i have a stock hei behind my tunnel ram with it locked out at 36 degrees. i have a msd 6al box on hand as well as a mallory 6al box.

im going to run the msd box once again....but i have part number msd 8984 which is a starter saver

and i have the msd 8682 dial control box.

im trying to figure out a way to make one of these work.......not getting much help yet from msd site...

just looking if someone is running something similar to mine and using this stuff.....

well i just bought me a msd-8984 starter saver.

it says its for magnetic pick ups and crank triggers........and then it said it has to be used with the msd dist.

well i think it will work just fine with my hei....since its a magnetic up as well...it may not be the same design as the msd but its still a two wire hook up...and they both do the same job.....

any thoughts on this why it wont works on my hei and msd 6al box...im kinda thinking msd is just being bias about having to use just there dist. for there starter saver.....

Never used a starter retard but have several buddies that have. All had locked out timing & were hard to crank. Nobody was happy with the units-don't know what brand or part no. Maybe they had lousy grounds-not sure, they just never worked as advertised. You could always put a toggle switch in between the "small" switching wire that turns on the 6AL (might be red-not sure). Use your regular starting key/switch to spin the engine. While the motor is spining, turn the toggle switch on to start the engine. An advantage would be that you could build oil pressure before the engine cranks. The toggle switch could be an anti-theft device if you hide it. Good luck. Dave H

I use the MSD starter saver on my '70. However, I'm also using the 6AL box and a MSD billet distributor.
Works fine...solved my starter issues with the timing locked at 37*. I use the 20* retard setting.

I don't know if it's what makes the difference, but all MSD distributors use the F*rd magnetic pickup in them. I found this out when I had a bad one on a 440 Mopar I put together last year. They sent me a new one, but they sent it surface mail. Called the tech line, weaseled it outta the tech guy, so I could just go to NAPA and buy one.

can you hook up a seperate power wire to the ignition ? That way you can get the starter spinning before you try to lite the fire

A simple way to get away from your starting problems is to put a switch inline to the ignition, crank the engine over with the switch off then when it gets spinning turn the ignition on and it will start. This will eliminate the bucking your starter is experiencing. Bob
