Uh-Oh here comes the clueless newbie. :) Looking at a Malibu project and wondering why when there is discussions about Turbo vs Superchargers that no-one mentions the hotter under bonnet temps that go with running turbo's. is this not really a problem?

Intercoolers really help alot. As do ceramic coatings.

I was thinking more about the increased temps of having the Turbo's there as opposed to a supercharger that runs cold in comparison.

Turbos leach less power to make it as it isnt belt driven also many arguw they are more efficient systems. Roots type blowers make tons of heat centrifugal type take a lot from the engine to turn and turbos just make boost and smiles. especially when you hear that bov. Superchargers really dont run much cooler they are under the hood and warm too some heat will be transferred into the turbo inlet air but the intercoolers make it negligible.

I run twin t-5s on my 67 and yes there is added heat to deal with.I run heat wrap on my lower manifolds, and run a insulated heat shield for my brake master/lines.But in all it's no problem.oh ya don't lay on the hood!

Two words...Turbo Blankets!

And how come cracked exhaust manifolds don't seem to get much attention anymore and yet on plenty of the older OEM machines used daily it was a real problem. Everyone is doing nice custom manifolds while the Gale Banks systems use a cast exhaust manifold instead, for longevity. The latest Hot Rod magazine has a twin turbo creation that won a string of awards with the turbo's and exhaust manifold running forward within an inch of the (twenty coats of paint) inner fenders. I doubt you would actually risk driving the thing anywhere. I see a lot of inherent problems in Turbo's over Supercharging especially for regular use and reliability, with heat dissipation and oil systems and more reading on my part may be required.

Slicksty7 are you running the turbo's down low or high up front with long exhaust manifolds?

Slicksty7 could you post some pics. I am putting together a DIY setup for my 66 with 2 T04B's just looking for some examples to get ideas for headers etc. Thanks

Can anyone suggest a few good books to read on Turbo installation and requirements?

I'm in the middle of reading "Turbochargers" by Hugh Macinnes, published by HPbooks. The book a little bit older but has WAY more info than one could take in only reading once! I've been told to read it twice then start to build. So far 65 pages in and im 10 times more informed on turbos than I was. It has all the math, but he also explains it all real good. I'm lookin to make an extreme budget (within reason) twin turbo install on my chevelle within the next two years or so. Please, if anyone has pictures of their set ups or any info, sharing it with us would be greatly appreciated! graemlins/beers.gif

i too have that turbochargers book by Hugh Macinnes, it is pretty in depth with the math and stuff. i stopped reading it. no real reason, i guess i dont give it the time although i should finish it. it gets confusing though thats for sure.

Yes guys I will post pics, and my turbos are about valve cover height.

I would suggest reading Corky Bell's "Maximum Boost". It is an excellent book on the theory, design and installation of turbocharger systems. He also has a book on superchargers called "Supercharged". Much of the theory of forced induction is the same, but it goes into the pros and cons of superchargers. These are two of the best books i have read on forced induction. Hope this helps.
