: Rochester 2 Jet power?
Dragn70 Feb 27th, 05, 12:13 PM The small 307/327 2jet flows around 196 4 barrel cfm and the 350 2jet flows around 249 cfm. About how much power could be picked up by adding the bigger 2jet to a 307? What about the 2jet and a 1.94 valve head? I have a bunch of parts and I planning an engine for a week end cruiser 70 malibu that I'm calling a "retro practical man's hotrod".
pdq67 Feb 27th, 05, 1:04 PM Can't answer you but I do figure some??
I also think a good old Performer cam up to a good old CC 268HE cam and the mod's you are talking about along with a cheap set of 1.625" four tube, long headers should wake it up quite a bit but can't say how much. All this and a set of 305HO, -601 or -416 heads and .020" steel shim headgaskets to up the CR.
I say -601's and -416's b/c they are anywhere from 55 to 58 cc chamber sized vs the double-hump style heads at about 61/62, (and usually 64), all the way up to 66 or so in big valve stock configuration.
And I figure the big 2-barrel below is a dandy too if it will fit on a SB 2-barrel intake??
I think it came on the early 389 Pontiac motors of old.. Anyway, that was where I scrounged the three I installed on my "trip-equipped", .060" over, 11.5 to 1 CR., 409 "W" motor I had in my car years and years ago..
He, He!! Walked through the old Boneyards and ended up paying $3 to $4 a piece for them!!! Kits were around $3 too WAYYYYY back then too..
Here is some more info. one of the guy's posted that I saved for times like this..
2G = Manual choke mostly used on truck and marine applications.
2GC = automatic choke... used on most everything.
2GV = automatic choke of a vacuum break design.
1 1/4 in flange carb.;
1 7/16 in bore with 1 3/32 venturi = 278 CFM
-------------------------------------------------
1 1/2 in flange carbs. with 1 11/16 bore;
1 3/16 venturi = 352 CFM
1 1/4 venturi = 381 CFM
1 5/16 venturi = 423 CFM
1 3/8 venturi = 435 CFM
All the Rochester 2 bbl carbs above rated at 3.0 in Hg.
Have fun and I think you just might create a sleeper..

Bomber '67 Feb 27th, 05, 1:45 PM Marty, for the price of a swap meet Performer intake and super common 600 carb I think you would be much better off. Even with the slightly larger 2 bbl carb and 1.94 head it will still be more snoozer than practical man's hot rod. Small cube engines need rpms for their hot rod side to emerge - the 2Jet will be more like a restrictor plate than anything else.

pdq67 Feb 27th, 05, 7:46 PM I donno about that b/c I used to beat on my Mom's new '65 Chevelle's, 195hp/283 motor 3-speed car above 6,000 all the time after I lashed it at like an 1/8th to a 1/4 turn at the rockers.
Sucker ran like the wind AND supprised more then a few hotter motored cars!!
AND I did install a Power-Pack, WCFB 4-barrel intake system on it AND Mom got mad and made me take it back off and put the stock, 2-barrel intake system back on it!! (He, He!! SNEAKY ME!!

PS., I would agree if we were talking about a 327 or 350 but not the smaller motors..
Bomber '67 Feb 27th, 05, 10:17 PM Okay, then I want to see the time slip. I'm thinking this 307 won't be suprising anyone. I'm suggesting the 4 bbl carb and Performer intake for the same reason GM offered 4 bbl carbs on 283's - it makes a difference, even on the small cube engines.
Tight lash or not, in the low 6,000+ rpm range, with a 2bbl 195 hp 283 you were well beyond the fat part of the powerband.
Other than that, nothing wrong with using up some of your accumulated parts.

Dragn70 Feb 27th, 05, 10:59 PM I have enough stuff to fake a 68 Vette small block if I wanted to got that way and I have two race cars so don't need a street beast. What I'm leaning towards is the look that a 70 Malibu would have had if someone made small changes in the early 70's. I have period correct gauges, tac and cast aluminum valve covers. I also have a 12 bolt posi 3.55, well built th350 and slighty over stock converter to help the 307 out.
Bomber '67 Feb 28th, 05, 2:36 AM ...a regular four bbl carb is a bit removed from the street beast catagory. I can guarantee that among the first things a young car nut in the 1970's would have done with a 307 Malibu is an aluminum 4 bbl intake and headers. Probably right after getting air shocks and fat rear tires.
Still, since you already have the parts to do it your way, go ahead and make it the way it pleases you.

pdq67 Mar 1st, 05, 10:36 PM Bomber,
I'm just talking about street fun back in '65 and '66 or so when a Power-Pack/283 and 250hp/327 were good running motors is all....
Heck, a H/S Classmate of mine's Dad had an Rambler Ambassador 4-door with a 250 or 270hp/327 motor with a 3-speed in it that flat got down the road fo a little, "big" car!!
And earlier, I ran all over my other Clasmate's '57 DeSoto Firedome/Torqueflite, He, He!! In my old '57 no less.. Car had fins on it like no tomorrow!!!
