This winter I'm planning on putting in a cage, and I was wondering if I keep my backseat can I make the main hoop crossbar removable like a door bar and still have it legal at the track? or at least could I make it like a swing out door bar, but have it swing up instead of out. I want to keep the backseat and still have it be functional to adults when I'm not at the track. Believe it or not my grandparents like to ride in my car on friday nights ( when it's cool out of course)
Thanks

I just saw a '65 GTO last weekend that had a complete interior and a 6 point cage. The front bars were the removable pin -type. Total of 6 holes were drilled for the install. Rear went though the package tray and into the trunk floor down to the frame. Side bars were right behind the bucket seats, fronts through the front floorpans, set up with removeable front bars. cage was painted the same blue as the car. A very clean install that kept everything in tact.

The first big issue to cover is what e.t./mph that you plan on running. That, along with particular packaging issues, will determine what you can and cannot do. My Elky has a 10 point totally inside the cab chrome moly cage. Because it was specifically planned to have a legal cage that did not have down bars exiting the back window the NHRA placed a number of requirements on the roll cage construction. In my case they specified additional corner bracing on the halo, additional side bars, and a non-removeable upper side bar (makes for interesting entry and exit). The roll cage fabricator worked directly with NHRA tech with the understanding that this car would eventually be running in the 9's. The only detail that had to be later addressed was a rule change regarding how my 5 point harness attatched to the cage.

Bomber,
That's interesting with the 10 Point and the EC. Although I didn't go over the '65 GTO at detail, the owner explained that he only had to make 6 holes in the pans (4 in the floorpans and 2 in the trunk floor - plus the 2 in the rear pakage tray) to install the cage. So now the assumption, I am assuming these were the only contact points, but now thinking about it, the 6 may only be the frame attachment points, the balance (diagonal bracing) may just be bolted to the floor pans.

1BAD70SS, I think having that bar removable might be an issue if you run 5 point harness. Ours has tabs welded to that bar for the shoulder straps, where the side bar doesn't. I see it as a major issue if you run a harness.
Rasson, that SOOOOO cool tht your grandparents like to ride w/ you smile.gif graemlins/thumbsup.gif
