It is a preformance question, so sorry in advance for the DP.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For my winter project I found an open 12 bolt 69 rear for my 69 Chevelle.
My question is should I keep the 2.56 ring and pinion and look for a series 2 posi OR should I scrap that idea and invest in a new 3 or 4 unit, and new gears? Are the series 2 units rebuildable and parts avilable if need be?
Everything seems in very good shape in this 12 bolt, with the exception of the carrier yoke being beat on  When I removed it the pinion nut chipped off the last 2 rows of teeth because they were peened over the nut. I think I could fix it with a die though, and still have a full nut plus some.
My set up is a basically stock 396 L-78 w/th400.
I don't plan on racing and basically use the car to cruise and hit the local shows.
The current open 10 bolt turns about 2500 RPM @ 55 MPH, Which I would like to lower and would accomplish with the 2.56.
Would the 2.56 sacrifice too much low end preformance or would the 396 be able to compinsate (I never had a BB before)?
I never did anything as far as changing a rear or messing with gear ratio's either  and ANY idea's, thought's, OR advice would be much appericated.
Cost is also a concern as the budget is tight for the car right now, Christmas is coming and with 3 young'en's  , we'll you get the picture...........LOL Thanks guys
