: Very Bad Vibration!!!!
bigE454SS Jul 31st, 07, 6:07 PM I get a very bad vibration in the shifter/transmission area when I'm at high speeds 80-100 plus and high RPM (only in 3rd or 4th). So bad that it vibrated the linkage nut to come loose. Any thoughts??? Maybe driveshaft aligment? I have a 72 LS5 rebuilt M22 4-speed and dual friction centerforce clutch. Here's a link to a video were you can hear the sound of it vibrating in one the runs. You can also hear something making a grinding noice when the car is sitting still (very first part of video), clutch in or out. Let me know what ya'll think???? thanks

GuysMonteSS Jul 31st, 07, 7:09 PM Doesent sound like a healthy noise. It might be a good idea to pull the tranny and have a look,it could be as simple as a bad throwout bearing.

Stickman Jul 31st, 07, 8:07 PM Not sure what that noise is... but I would stop driving it hard like that, and get it up on ramps ASAP... sounds like somethings gonna give ...My trans didn't sound that bad, and still cost $600 to fix ...

I agree, that sounds bad. No more making videos like that until you get it figured out. Look for obvious driveline damage, if you see nothing, pull the trans.
SWHEATON Jul 31st, 07, 9:08 PM Couldn't listen to the video but if your running stock size or type motor /trans/rear the car came with from the factory i would think the aln of the driveline would be ok unless it was hit hard at one time or you had broken motor & or trans monts.
1st things i would chk or replace is both ujoints/check front trans yoke on drive shaft & rep if worn or sloppy, have the d/shaft ballanced, check & rep tail shaft bushing if worn, chk trans & motor mounts, chk for slop in back protion of d/shaft and or rear yoke to see if there is play/slop in the pinion bearing, possible loose pinion nut.
More often then not ballancing the d/shaft along with checking all the other things i mentioned and replacing anything that is not in like new cond doing this will either fix it or at least improve it.
If your running a 454 do you have the correct flywheel for your externally ballanced motor because if not that could be the problem.
But again i couldnt view or hear the noise in the video.

bigE454SS Aug 2nd, 07, 2:39 PM Thanks guys for your input. I'm gunna jack her up this weekend and check things out. The through out bearing is only 8 months old with limited once a week driving. The fly is the original but was machined 8 months ago as well.
It's either a malfunctioning part of somethings out of wack. I guess we'll start with the easy stuff and work my way up until it stops.

BigE...I would start with the flywheel, and work backwards...good luck!
JodysTransmissions Aug 2nd, 07, 8:28 PM Did the pilot bushing have an interference fit when you installed it? I've heard some loose fitting pilot bushings make some awful noises.
It is hard to tell by a video the actual noise and where the annoyance is coming from. But, I will repeat as some others said, "Stop doing the 5,000 RPM shifts until you fix her"!
Other than the unidentified noise, she sounds good rowing through the gears!
