: draining the gas tank

I want to remove the gas tank before I start restoring my car, what's the easiest and safest way to drain/empty the remaining gas out of the tank before I remove it? Siphon it out or what? I ran the gas gauge down to almost empty and I have an empty 5 gallon gas can for whatever I drain out.

I plan to store the empty tank in a garage until ready to put it back on, anything I need to do to wash out the inside to take care of the fumes and prevent corrosion while in storage?

Thanks

If you have an electric pump, it's easy..... :)

If not, you can still buy a cheap one at the parts store, and rig up an electric siphon. You could attatch it to the fuel line in the engine compartment, and suck as much as you can out, or fish a hose into the tank through the filler neck. Won't get quite all of it out, but most of it this way. likely more than usig the stock pickup.

Once you drop the tank, you can angle it to put the little remaining gas into a corner, and fish the hose into it and get some more out.

No electric pump, mechanical.

How much gas is still in the tank?? I just siphoned mine out, then dropped the tank and poured as much out as I could through the filler neck..

Once you get it out I would take it to a radiator shop and have it boiled out & checked, then they can coat the inside if necessary..

Probably not more than a gallon or two left in the tank. I could probably drop it as is since I'll use a floor jack and board.

What's it cost to have it boiled and what does that do?

Using an electric pump is not the safest thing to do. All it takes is one spark and your disassembly process could be greatly accelerated. Go the siphon or the hand pump route.

Go to your local hardware store and pick up a hand pump that is fuel compatible.

..and when you get the siphon pump, get a brass nipple end that fits in the end of the in-tank hose and put it on TIGHT with a hose clamp. Otherwise, the hose won't go all the way to the bottom. You should be able to get practically all the gas this way.

Fill it with water, drill a hole, install a drain valve =)

I would leave it in there, but take some wire and secure the board on your jack really good, the tank usually will stay on the board, its the board falling off the jack that will get you.

And don't forget to use a brass punch when you remove the tank pickup.
