In the next couple of weeks I'm going to be installing heddman headers on my 65. Right now i've got 40's flows. I want to try something else. I was thinking of the Spin Tech Sportman mufflers. They sound really nice. What about Borla? I've never heard them, but people have told me they sound real nice and are a lot better, performance wise. Do you guys have any suggestions or advice?

I installed Flowmasters 2 1/2" american thunder system on my '69 camaro and thought it sounded nice, but everyone seems to run flows. So, when I did the velle's exhaust I ordered the 2 1/2" Flowmaster pipes without the mufflers and installed Dynomax ulta-flo mufflers. It sounded o.k., a little ruffer/crackle to it and not as deep tone as the flows, also was a little louder. Anyway if I had to do it over I would go with the big block Flowmaster mufflers. just my .02

Sound is kind of a personal preference. I have been happy with dyno-max super turbos. I went with them because they were pretty quiet and still performed well on a friends car (he had macs and the dyno-max were night and day quieter). If I were starting from scratch, I would look into a x-pipe, I like the way they sound.

I'm a diehard Hooker Aerochamber fan. They have that unexplainable chambered sound like flowmasters but they aren't as high-pitchy or as loud. Apparently they flow better than Blowmasters... I can see straight through mine but somehow they're "chambered" :D

do the aerochambers have that "tinny" sound where you can really hear the cam? i love that sound.. i was going to buy a set of 40s to get that sound, but if the aeros have it too, then even better....

I'm actually not in livermore anymore but im over there alot. I used to work over by the airport down the street from goped. I leave it as hometown cuz i've already had two different towtruck drivers remark that they have seen my car in my driveway. email me and i'll give you my cell number if u want to hear them. Car needs to be driven anyway. Three whole weeks without a cruize :( Its a sbc with hooker comps and flowmaster pipes btw.

I know they are 40's, but I'm not sure what size they are. If they are im sure you can have them.

i had spintechs that had same side out as in. that way i could run the exhaust in front of my rear tires and still have the muffler in the pocket in the rear seat area. it got a little loud with my exhaust by my ear...so i put areo chambers and 3" pypes tailpipes on the car. i wish i would have gotten new 3" spintechs. i never did a dyno run with the spin techs or the new areo chambers but it seat of the pants feel means any thing i have definitley left some sack on the table.

this is running through a 3" xpipe to areochambers to 3" pypes tailpipes. the areo's sound great very low pitched and not tinny at all and i love that. but...

anyway just my experience in the last couple of weeks. later tommy.

ps the pypes tailpipes fit really nice...kinda tight on a lowered car but great fit.

Adman, I'm running 3" spintechs into tailpipes on my car, there's a recording on my website in my signature if you wanna listen. If you get down to Santa Cruz you can hear them in person as well...

Note really. They do have that hollow sound but instead of it being high-pitched/tinny like flowmasters its more deep and "growly" Very hard to explain without hearing. I wish my car was together I'd go out and make a video of it.

I've never met a person whos bad mouthed Aerochambers though. Every single person I've ever heard or read buying them loved 'em. Of course if you wanna sound like every other car in your town, go with flowdisasters but if you want something original that still sounds great, aerochambers all the way graemlins/hurray.gif

so, is it the fact that too many people, mustangs, camaros, etc etc have flows that they are disliked to a point? if only a few people had them, would you still dislike them purely because of their sound, rather than the "me too" factor?

I had Borlas on my previous '69 SS396 and loved 'em! They had a great sound. I will never run anything else.

Jeff,
The spintech sound is gone from your website, you might want to check that out!

At this point Im proably going to go with the spintechs sportsman mufflers.

Well I don’t want to be a jerk but I agree with the other gentlemen that all flow master mufflers sound like it is going through a coffee can? Or if you get the right flow masters they are so loud that you might as well run straight pipes? The groups that I hang with we have tried just about every muffler out there and out of the 12 of us with muscles cars found that the Dynomax Super Turbo in a 3” flow threw sounds the best. They make my 67 chevelle with a 327 sound almost as good as my buddies 68 camaro 454. On top of this we all drag race and have found that they offer so little restriction that we leave them on when racing unless it’s a good air day and we dump them more for weight than restriction. Just thought I’d throw my 2 cents in.
If you need the part number just let me know
Thanks

Jeff, your car is very nice. I really like the spin techs. Why don't you have any of you reving your car up real nice smile.gif

I run a set of Super Turbos, on a mildly worked over 10.5:1, hydraulic cammed 283 w/ a somewhat rough idle.... exhaust is through manifolds w/ 2.5" pipe exiting at the bumper. Unfortunately, I don't have a soundclip, but would describe the sound as pretty deep with a mellow growl, and powerful at idle, and then really opens up to a ballsy, throaty roar when you get on it. It is a little on the quiet side for my taste, but can still be heard coming from about a block and a half away when cruising. It seems to have gotten a bit quieter with age (was a bit louder and to my taste when first installed(maybe i'm going crazy)- my ex-girlfriend could hear me coming into her neighhborhood when i would get on it, from inside her house 2 short streets away.... it was pretty funny since she'd be waiting right outside when i pulled up)

Overall, I am pretty pleased with the muffs, they have a nice even tone, without emphasizing any frequencies to sound annoying. I just wish they could be a bit louder, though they are quite a bit louder than the stock style mufflers that were on it before.

Can't go wrong with 50 series flows and straight 3" pipes, mine sound great! If you go outside I'll start the car, maybe you'll be able to hear it ;)

http://www.pypesexhaust.com/

check this place out they have down loads so you can hear exhaust online and see some data with there mufflers and others.....

i went to alot of site and listen to alot of mufflers ........but i finally found the muffler that not only sounded very good to me and had some data to back up there power potential was FULLBOAR mufflers.....

i know data from each company and there hp ratings can or could be boggus but i feel it could give you some sort of idea of what you are getting......

for 40 bucks each i got a fully welded muffler with 2 1/2 in and outs with 400 and some cfm flow and they rated them for up to 376 hp with a full 2 1/2" exhaust system......

i was impressed with the sound and weather or not my car is any faster over the junk i had on it before not for sure.......but i can say all my friends love or like the sound and give compliments on the exhaust......sure sounds faster and the cool factor went up........lol........
