Previous owner installed a Mallory Unilite 9000 breakerless distributor and a HyFire 6-A control box. I looked up the instruction sheet on their website and see that the distributor is factory set at 32 degrees of advance at 3,000 RPM. I did not see any instruction on how to adjust the advance. Can anyone tell me if there is an adjustment?

I feel your pain, same problem on my car. I've had it 2 years and stil haven't figured it out, about ready to scrap it and get an msd or something. Although i haven't tried all that hard to figure it out. There has to be a way, and i hope somebody here knows what it is.
Good luck, Jeff

They can't be too hard to adjust. It took my carb/distributor guy all of 5 minutes to set mine up the way I wanted it. 20º mechanical all in @ 2800. I installed it at 18 initial and 38 total, again, all in at 2800.

Im not positive but the mallory may be like the old accel distributors that required the shaft be removed and the lower plate removed for access to the weights and springs. If you can't take the rotor off and see the weights then I'd bet they are located in the distributor's body..

ive had mine apart and if memory serves theres a screw with a slot and some indext marks on it. i took mine to a distributor guru here and he set mine up to be in at 2200. for some reason it seems like its coming in at a higher rpm. at anyrate im going the msd route here soon and locked timing.

The weights are in the body. IIRC, there is a cover you remove and then a couple screws to loosen then adjust to the index marks. Mine was checked on a dist machine. I might add that mine has worked flawlessly for over 5 years and I don't plan on changing to anything else.

My unilite came with a bunch of plastic keys of different sizes, have to remove the top plate and loosen screws below it and set the amount of advance you want in the distributor, then use the different springs to get the rate of advance.

guys, thanks for the information. I did not get any of the plastic things or springs from the previous owner. I'll see if there is a tech help line at Mallory that can help me solve the problem.

If it is a Comp 9000, you can set the advance to whatever you want.

I think all Mallorys come with 24*-26* in them...you adjust from there.

Mallory has an advance curve change kit for the Comp 9000 that has an assortment of springs and plastic gages. The kit I have is for YT and YH mechanical advance models only.

The springs can be used in various combinations to obtain a two stage curve using one strong spring with various others or a single stage curve by using matched pairs of springs.

YT models are factory set to give 24 degrees advance and is adjustable down to 16 and up to 32 by bending the advance tab.

YH models have an adjustment plate that can adjust the advance from 0 to 28 degrees by loosening the screws and using the appropriate plastic gage to set the plate for various total advance settings.
