I have to replace my flexplate on my SS and I figured with the trans. pushed back I might as well update the torque converter. My buddy has an Art Car that ran him around $600 bucks. I heard thats a good converter, but I'm looking to spend about 1/2 of that price. Heres the specs: Big block 408, 10:1, around .540 inches of lift, 290 heads, 650 double (carb size will increase to 750 double soon) TH-400 with a kit, 3.31 Posi out back, with a P295 rear tire (10-11''). I'm looking to get around 2,700-3,000 stall out of it. What difference does the size make? (I.E. 11'', 10''). And what would be a good choice based on those figures given? Thanks for all replies!

OK..I am probably going to get slammed..but..Art Carrs address and phone number is the same as Torco converters...Torcos are 1/2 the price of Carrs. Im using a 9.5 billet 4500 stall on my SBC. It works well and stalls exactly where I wanted. Talk to Mickey at torco for a budget converter that worked for me. Steve O. has great prices on BTE converters too

Have a PDQ 3500 stall converter designed and made from scratch from one of our club members. He recently switched to a TKO five speed and now selling his stall converter. I guarentee this will be the strongest and best build converter you will find. Email me if you are interested! The stall converter came out of big 427 big block that runs mid ll's, so strength and durability should not be a concern.

With those gears you should run about a 2200 stall im guessing duration @50 is 230 with the car being fairly heavy that will help flash higher. much bigger converter would slip alot at cruise speeds. If you want about 3000 or more your gears should be at least 3.73

I run a B&M 2400 Holeshot in my 70 SS454..it flashes to 2800 and does not have excessive slippage..in fact, its pretty tight..for an "off the shelf" unit,I'm pretty happy with it.

You can order a brand new converter from Art Carr with anti-balloon plates with a stall speed from 2000-5900? rpm for around $300. I just ordered one, and they had to build it, and it is going to cost me $320 to my door. The tech told me that Art Carr, actually bought out Torco. graemlins/clonk.gif

The BTE 11" ones normally stall in the 2500-2800 area, and are $255 shipping included in the lower 48. The 10" BTE stall range is 3400-3800, but they can be fine-tuned lower a few hundred rpms with different fin angles and a stator change, and are $355 shipping included in the lower 48. Both have furnace brazed fins, new hubs, new Torringtons, dual anti-ballooning plates, a one-year warranty on sprag and stator, etc.

i have a a "big end" stall that is from TSI........i bought it off ebay for 150 bucks to my door.......it has a stall rating of 2400-2800 rpms and with my bbc 414ci its stalls right at 2800 rpms.........im even running 2.41 posi unit and seems to be just fine so far......no problems... last outing my car ran 14.47 with a 2100 stall so i have no idea yet to what e.t. improvements i have with this stall......

even with my 2.41 gears out on the highway it holds at 2300 rpms @ 70 mph........same as the 2100 stall convertor..........

but i did feel a small difference on the street when i leave a stop lights it does go up alittle in rpms over the 2100 convertor to get the car moving...........
