: Turndown exhaust before rearend
Brian71malibu Jan 4th, 04, 11:11 PM I have a mild 350 that im going to put flowmaster 40 series mufflers on. I not quite sure what tail pipes I want so i decided why not have any. Does anyone have pics or advice about putting turndowns right after the muffler?
sinned Jan 4th, 04, 11:29 PM Hey Brian, I have always run turndowns on all my rides. Drawbacks--- Exhaust in cabin sitting in traffic, good amount of reverb at the "sweet" spot around 2700 rpm. Real easy to work though, disconnect at the collector and drop the whole the system.
Rigrock Jan 4th, 04, 11:30 PM You'll need ear plugs. I put on flowmasters with turndowns before the rear, went around the block brought it back in took the flowmasters off and sold them then put ultraflos on. Much better.
Brian71malibu Jan 4th, 04, 11:36 PM How much exhaust would you say that would get into the cabin its a 2 dr malibu?
Brian71malibu Jan 4th, 04, 11:47 PM I have a friend with the setup i want except it exits the back(tailpipes). He also has a hoped up 350 with headers. I love the sound it makes. How much louder would the turndowns be?
Purs Jan 4th, 04, 11:56 PM I have just what you describe on my 408 BBC. I get comments almost every time I'm out about how sweet it sounds. It does have some resonance at right about 2700 RPM's like mentioned. At some point I'll probably run them out the back, but for now I really like it. :D
RacnJsn95 Jan 5th, 04, 12:19 AM I run 50 series Flowmasters with turn downs. My car would have been way to loud with 40s. In fact, I put my friends exhaust system with 40s on my car and it sounded like crap! Maybe its the H-pipe on my car that helps out the sound. I haven't noticed a problem with exhaust in the cab though.
Rudedog Jan 5th, 04, 12:26 AM Had the same set up on my 72 Blazer as rigrock on his velle. Had fun setting off alarms all over town. Earplugs would be VERY adviseable. souded just as cool after tailpipes, still set off alarms. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Brian71malibu Jan 5th, 04, 12:36 AM my engine is mostly stock except 4bbl edelbrock 650 cfm carb and edelbrock performer intake, no headers. would earplugs still be adviseable ?
Brian71malibu Jan 5th, 04, 1:06 AM ?
sinned Jan 5th, 04, 1:09 AM Headers make some diff but not alot, it is loud graemlins/thumbsup.gif with turndowns and 40's. I like it. Not alot of exhaust but you can definately smell it.
BK72SS Jan 5th, 04, 4:04 AM I use to have a full exhaust (tail pipes) on my 72 Chevelle with 40 series Flowmasters. I then removed the tail pipes and added turndowns, this made the exhaust twice as loud and a little more deeper sounding. This was loud enough for me for a couple of years but then I wanted it louder so now I have Dynomax race magnum bullets with turndowns. This thing is really loud now, you can litteraly hear me before you see me. The drawbacks I have found with having turndowns are they do make it more noisy inside your car, there is a slight ammount of exhaust fumes inside but barely any when you have your windows down, and when you drive through dusty areas the turndowns blow dust all over your car even on the dash and under the hood. As for the recomendations for ear plugs, I think there was a hint of sarcasim added but it will be pretty loud inside. As for my complete system it is behind a mild 350 (it doesn't even have a rough idle) I have Hooker comp headers, 2 1/2" pipe(no X or H pipe), Dynomax race magnum bullets with turndowns. This setup has set of a few car alarms and has turned plenty of heads and I love the sound (it's deep and ballsy) . I do remember seeing a tag bracket that says "If it's too loud, your too old" but if you decide to give turndowns a try save your tail pipes in case you would want to reinstall them if you don't like the turndowns.

ezstriper Jan 5th, 04, 7:42 AM MY 71 B/B HAD FLOWMASTERS AND TURNDOWNS, FOR ME IT WAS WAY TO LOUD INSIDE AND SOUNDED LIKE YOU WERE RUNNING 4k WHEN IT WAS REALLY 2500. INSTALLED
TAIL PIPES AND FACTORY TIPS, SOUNDS MUUUUUCH BETTER TO ME, ROB....
505Nova Jan 5th, 04, 9:17 AM I got sick and tired of the turndowns blowing dust everywhere so I angled them both inward at about a 20 degree angle towards each other. That seemed to help a lot, far less dust and no more gravel blasted circles when firing the car up. Might have even made it a tiny bit quieter
fourfiddyfour Jan 5th, 04, 9:37 AM Its not a chevelle, but, I have a 1968 firebird with a 462 that I am running 3" pipe to summit turbo mufflers, then turn downs on them right before the rear axle. The sound is great, not too loud, bearly any resonance. It would be louder with flowmaster 40s. The downside is like others said, blowing dust all over and some exhaust smell inside if your sitting in traffic for a while.
EddieC67ss Jan 5th, 04, 5:08 PM Quick question on this subject, don't certain states have inspection laws that require that the tailpipes have to be past the rear axle?
71-307 Jan 5th, 04, 5:32 PM i have turn downs on my 71 4 door, 307 headers and what not, just running stainless turbo style mufflers and yes like everyone else says it has that sweet spot. at first i thought it sounded alright till after i got many comments from people on how good it sounds. about the laws im not sure when i got mine does i asked the guy and he said hes never heard of one. (ontario) but i think it would matter mostly on emmision cars.
Matt Leuck Jan 5th, 04, 6:28 PM <--- Buying new tailpipes as I type smile.gif
When i redid my exhaust about 2 yrs ago I had a local shop make my tailpipes. Big mistake. I decided that they were ugly and very poorly made so I cut them off a few months ago.
And now i'm already looking around for a good set of mandrel bent tailpipes. It makes the exhaust tone much deeper, and you get more resonance. But you lose the crisp sound of the exhaust. With the tails, my Dr Gas X pipe and Spintech muffs had a very sharp clear bite in the sound. It kicked ass.
Now it just drones and sounds plain. :(
To each his own though smile.gif Good luck

Brian71malibu Jan 5th, 04, 7:36 PM What angle do you point your turndowns at? 90? 45?
Rudedog Jan 5th, 04, 8:24 PM Yes Brian. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Brian71malibu Jan 5th, 04, 8:33 PM That did really awnser my question. I should of what what angle do you guys have you turndowns at?
Mr.McFast Jan 5th, 04, 8:33 PM i have full exhaust with 2 1/4 in 40s flowmasters and im about to cut the tail pipes off before the gas tank will it make mine very much louder the way it is its not loud enuff i want people to say DAMN THATS A BADD CAR when i cruise by :D tongue.gif :D graemlins/beers.gif graemlins/thumbsup.gif

4-door Chevelle Jan 6th, 04, 3:26 PM When I had full exhaust custom made from the headers back to the bumper I had them put in standard turbo mufflers ... It was quiet, too quiet. Last summer before racing season started up here in Minnesota I cut off the tail-pipes and put in the Summit turbo mufflers and put turn downs on. I angled them outward just enough so the exhaust hits the ground just inside the tire. It sounds good and flows fairly good but I do get some exhaust smell in the car.
If you don't run the tailpipes all the way to the back of your car, you will have soot all over the bottom of your car from the pipes on back.

I used my turndowns into turnouts. My car being backhalfed made it impossible to run any kind of tailpipes. The turndowns are installed backwards after a little trimming. Pipe size is 3.5
Jsavdog Jan 7th, 04, 9:03 AM I have Ultra Flows that turn down before the rear end. I used to have the downturns pointing straight down but found that angling them out at 45 degrees to the sides made the sound slightly less boomy (resonant) and more raspy, which I prefer. Never tried turning them in towards each other but would be curious to hear the difference.
