So what do you guys think? Are you supposed to set base timing while in 'drive' with ebrake on, or set base timing while in 'park'?

I'm trying to learn more about all this stuff...

You should set your base(initial timing) with the motor idling fairly low like apporx 600 rpms (as to not activate mech advance/vacuum adv plugged) with car in park,no need for neutral.

If your running a bone stock GM cam use Gm's timing spec for that yr motor but if your running an aftermarket perf cam then the stock cam specs are NG,too retarded.

For any mild to fairly stout perf cam you will need anywhere from 14-18 deg btdc intial advance and approx 34-36 total (@ 3k rpms) including mech advance with the vacuum advance plugged.

I check base timing as Scott said on my driver. On the bracket car the idle in park is too high. I could lower it to do this but I usually just set the brake and put it in gear. Be sure to block the tires, if you do this, and don't go winging on the throttle.
