I am trying to set up my 69 Chevelle 307 to power steering with the Jeep upgrade, but being a novice to these cars i have lots of questions.
I have attached some photo's and will start with the pump. I assume i have the two brackets shown where they should go but what is the other one for and where does it go? http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e334/453759/PICT0092.jpg
I have taken a photo of the location it should go but where exactly ? http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e334/453759/PICT0089.jpg
Have i got problems with the alternator mounted on the right side?
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e334/453759/PICT0090.jpg
Finally can you give me some idea of the bolts required as i do not have any and need to source some in the UK. I have worked out the ones on the pump are 3/8 BSW . What are the others ?

Thanks

Mike

That small bracket goes on the outer exhaust stud I believe.

You need a double stud instead of a bolt on that outer exhaust hole if I'm correct.

The four tapped holes in the face of the power steering pump are 3/8-16 UNC threads. The studs sticking out of the back of the pump are also male 3/8-16 UNC threads.

Thanks guys. I understand i need a stud for the manifold. Do i need a long bolt ( UNC ?) to pivot the left hand bracket on and should this have a sleeve in between to stop it compressing. Where does this bolt go on the block ?
I still can't work out the exact location. Do you use the hole near the core plug in the photo?

Sorry to bring this to the top again but i am getting nowhere with this modification and need help as i am not likely to find anyone in the UK who knows.
I am really concerned the alternator position is an issue and i think i have read some are on the left but i would then have to get rid of the power steering pump, but that is ok.
Using the photo's attached can anyone guide me on fitment please. I have offered it up roughly using one of the holes in the picture but it seems to foul either the other pulley or the steering box but as i say this is only roughly lined up.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I think i have worked out now that i need to move the Air Con compressor which is on the left, facing the block, and then move the alternator to this location. This will then allow me the space to fit the pump on the right.

Can i remove the compressor and join the two pipes together ?

Also any location pictures would be a great help to me thanks.

I just did the Jeep conversion on my 67, which has a 79 vintage small block. My alternator is on the right side (passenger side here in the US) and the AC would go on the top left. I took my brackets off a late 80's pickup truck, but I can maybe go shoot a couple of photos if you like. My brackets don't look like yours, but you might get an idea. My garage door is broken, and I need to rewind the springs and cables, so I can't open the door to get the Chevelle out very far to get good photos.

I think the bolts for the power steering gear itself might have been metric, but I just ran in the ones that came out of the old manual gear. My gear was from a 97 Grand Cherokee Limited. Pump and brackets were from 86 or 87 Chevy pickup.

UNC= Unified(?) National Coarse, as opposed to UNF, Unified(?) National Fine.

Saginaw Model 700 steering gear mounting bolts have never been converted to metric. They are still 7/16-14 UNC.

The pressure and return line ports went metric o-ring in 1980. Pressure port (inboard near the aluminum cover) has a female M18x1.5 thread. The low pressure return line port (nearest the input shaft) has a female M16x1.5 thread.

Thanks guys.

I have found a bracket supplier in the UK for the alternator so i will move this over. A friend who works in aviation says he can make me up some pipes so the thread size was usefull Jim. What are the sizes in the stock pump?

Anyone know if i can just join the compressor pipes together when i junk the aircon ?

I'm really glad to hear the threads are still UNC. I thought that was the case, so I started the bolts by hand, then ran them in with the air gun. The threads poking through were pretty shiny, so I thought maybe I rammed the UNC bolts into metric holes.

I bought a used metric pump, and a HP line from an 80 Camaro that almost fit without modification. I had to do some bending on the hard line to get it to fit. Your writeup in the tech section (is that where I found it?) was very helpful. ...though the 2-letter codes don't seem to match the couple of gears I saw. Also, the old rag joint slipped right on the Jeep input shaft. I didn't need the one I yanked from the pickup truck.

I really like my power steering.

You may not have to swap A/C and alternator... check out the brackets at www.alangrovecomponents.com. They have about the widest selection of brackets I have found/seen anywhere.

The pictures are on the screen when i view this thread. Am i the only one who can see these.?

I have now purchased an alternator bracket to go on the left. I still need to source the bolts for the brackets and pump now. It keeps raining at the moment so i have not had a chance to check out the location again but anyone with some pictures of the brackets in place would be great.

Thanks
