: High Performance water pumps
Chris R Apr 12th, 99, 6:45 PM I whould like to know what type of water pump I should go with on the 396 thats going in my 66ss? It is not stock (comp cam and valve train, stealth intake, modified 781 heads, headers,). I have been told that pumps like the cast iron Flow cooler are good, but what about aluminum pumps like those made by companies like Weiand and Edelbrock? How about Stewart? Thier pumps are used in NASCAR. Does Stewart even make a pump for Big blocks?
Anyway, thanks for your inputs and opinions. Chris R.
Aug98 Apr 12th, 99, 10:33 PM I have had an aluminum Moroso on mine for years and have never had any problems.
Bob Tiley Apr 13th, 99, 6:04 AM I have the Flow Kooler and it works fine it dropped my temps about 10° and was cheap at $70. The Stewart pumps I think are similar and of good quality, but I do not know if they make one for a big block.
Sean Flanagan Apr 13th, 99, 7:50 AM I just saw a new unit from Stewart components in Car Craft, They have larger flow passages, 40% more flow and 2x the pressure of standard pumps.. They have a pump for almost every app.
Still trying to get a price though!

Todd Apr 13th, 99, 10:01 AM I use a stock pump and 3 core new Modine radiator on a big block. Car runs at 170 all day long even in 95 degree heat on a slow cruise down the beach. I've heard the flow kooler works well and I know Summit sells a kit for a few dollars that rivets a plate on the stock impeller (which achieves the same thing as the flow kooler). I run 12.30's on the street so I'm not running a stock motor either.

Digging up an old post, but does anyone have any real experence with the Flow Kooler impeller discs used on a stock iron water pump?
Thanks!!
mc71454 Oct 11th, 05, 12:45 AM I ran a GM crate motor cast iron take-off pump I got for $5 at a swap meet for 4 or so years. This year I put a Stewart Stage II pump on. I do not notice any difference in cooling, but it sure looks nice with the clear coat I put on it.
Another pump, a "Victor Series" lasted 1 1/2 seasons before it started leaking. that was a wasted $170.
SSJeff Oct 11th, 05, 6:24 AM I just installed a Stewart stage 2 on my BB stroker and it is nice and holds the temp right at 180. Pricey but seems to be very high quality. Ordered right from the website and had it in 3 days.

I.ve been running a Stewart Stage 2 on my 396 for a couple years now and have had no problems at all. Check they're web site, they have different types of water pumps for big blocks.
bim38 Oct 11th, 05, 10:01 PM I have used a stock water pump on all of my big blocks A good radiator makes a difference. My 38 Chevy with a 454 uses a stock pump with a re-cored radiator out of a 1976 Aspen and it never gets hotter than 190 in traffic. The stock pumps aren't pretty but they work for me.
