Price sounds pretty good but I'm thinking if you ended up wanting some type of a crossover that you will have to purchase separately then for $179 you are really just getting tailpipes, hardware and reducers. An X crossover or an H balance tube is going to replace the downpipes from the headers to the mufflers. If the downturns are a separate piece you add on at the back, then that will just require cuts and clamps. If the tailpipes already turn down as a one piece unit, then they will not fit all years A body and will require cutting out a section, flaring and re-attaching. Something to consider.

I just ordered one. I promise I will give an objective evaluation once received. tongue.gif

I'm wondering how it compares to a Torque Tech or TA Performance system as far as fit goes..they say you get what you pay for..I don't mind suffering a little for the install, but if its one of these kinds graemlins/angry.gif ..then the $150 savings vs. the TT/TA systems isn't worth it

Review & Observations: Very courteous salesperson. Very speedy delivery. I ordered the kit Tues. and received it today.

Yes they are mandrel bent 16 gauge aluminized.

It includes two two piece headpipe to muffler pipes and two TWO piece tailpipes. Mandrel bends are good but are stretched slightly crushed in several places from the mandrel tooling.

The tailpipes do NOT have downturns nor are downturn extensions included.

The collector connection is accomplished by a slight flare in the forward downpipe and two laser cut flanges and a paper gasket. A definite problem area for exhaust leaks.

There is an adequate supply of hardware and hangers but it is all oem grade unplated steel and very universal.

The tailpipes have a very pronounced over-the-axle bend and I don't know why. This bend looks rather restrictive to me. (see pic)

Lastly, one of the Tailpipes had a 6 inch split in the seam. An obvious defect in the pipe itself. What I can't believe is the person making them for Jeg's missed it and the person boxing the order for me also missed it.

Assuming the split in the pipe was a freak occurance, I would still only recommend this system for the very knowledgable do-it-yourselfer that has a full day to work with and WILL NOT want to add an X or H crossover.

do they sell the kit minus the tailpipes? i'd like to have a good 3" exhaust to the rear, but i don't wanna spend an arm and a leg to do it.

In DEC 2003 issue of "CHEVY HIGH PERFORMANCE" they have an article where they install a 3" flowmaster exhaust kit #17200 on a 71 bb chevelle. it gained 20.9hp at 5,000 rpm . looks like it was compleat with H pipe, mufflers, and turndown tailpipes ,looks good to me!!!!!!!!! graemlins/hurray.gif they also put on flowmaster ball-flange collectors!! no leaks and better ground clearence. page 51 . i am going to call flowmaster to inquire on this i,ll let you all know the scoop!!!!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I talked to flowmaster when I ordered my American Thunder exhaust a couple of weeks ago and the guy kind of laughed at the hp claims in the ads and article coming out. He indicated that if I had a real nasty 454 the 3" would be worth the price but otherwise the 21/2 would perform better, cost less and that the hp claims with the 3" were from a lousy prior exhaust set up on a pretty strong motor. In other words it was really choked before the 3" upgrade. I went with the 2 1/2 based on his advise and the significant cost difference.

i'll tell you from my experiences, any performance oriented bbc needs 3" exhaust. most sbc that are in the 383+ cubic inch range and have decent compression, cam, and 1 3/4" headers also needs 3" exhaust. 2 1/2" exhaust is good for most stret driven cars with a sbc. i picked up a half second going from 2 1/2" exhaust to 3 1/2" exhaust when i had the 454 in my 71.i went a little overkill, but i'm pretty sure that it would've run about the same with 3" pipe. the guys you talk to on the phone are basically salesmen. if there's any question in your mind which exhaust is better, go with the bigger choice, cause you never know when you might upgrade your engine. ;) kinda like camshafts and carbs. they tell you a conservative number, i always go with the next step bigger than they say. they'll tell you that a decent performance 350 needs a 600cfm carb, but a 650-750 will make more power almost everytime.

Ccass, thanks for the pics and the update..I'm assuming even though your website says its a 2.5" kit,it is the 3" in the photos (and you have the correct Jegs 3" p/n listed) I appreciate your honest opinion too.Now I know why a Torque Tech or T/A 3" exhaust (or one of yours) costs more money..because it will fit with minimum hassle, plus the quality of workmanship in the pipes and hardware is better graemlins/thumbsup.gif and thats a good thing.

mr 4 speed, Yes, it was the 3" system we tested. 2 1/2" is a typo. We'll fix it later today.

Check out PERFORMANCE YEARS, they sell a X-Pipe kit there that's mandrel bent. I bought and installed the 2 1/2 kit. It comes with everything including mufflers for $279. I don't think the 3" kit is much more and I'm sure the kit would be even cheaper without the mufflers. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I ordered and received the flowmaster 17200 3 inch system a couple of weeks ago. The pipes are sweet and the mandrel bends look real nice. I'm having the kit installed next week. I called flowmaser about a month ago and they referred me to a company out of Florida. I couldn't find any other venders in my area.
Also the price was $455.00.
