: bbc heads and Chet Herbert cam question

I have a few questions I`m hopeing someone here can answer. First, I have a set of 820 casting bbc heads. According to mortec.com they are very similar to the 049/781 heads but have a 113 cc chamber. Is anyone running these or run them before? My second question is about Chet Herbert cams. My buddy had one in a 454 a few years back and ran very well. It was a solid lifter cam with 255/265 .600/.620 on a 110lsa. The guy at Chet Herbert said if he wasn`t going to degree the cam to install it 4* advanced, which he did. In a 9to1 454 with ported 990`s it ran low 11`s in a 67 camaro. How would this cam run in a 10.5 to 1 489 with the above heads ported with big valves in a 70 chevelle? I know I`m leaving out what gears, tranny, head mods I`m going to do but to be honest, I have`nt decided 100% yet. I just remember this cam sounded great and pulled very hard. Before the cam change he had run a best of 11.59 and on the first pass with the new cam it ran 11.16, no other changes. I can`t remember the mph but I think it was around 118-120. Thanks guys.

I would order from Doug Herbert and save 8% in taxes. Call 1-800-444-7373 to order free cat! Looking in my cat. Doug's cam shows 255/263 .555/.557 on 110, 3000-7300rpm and next cam a 266/276 .600/.620 on 110, 3500-7500rpm with 11.0 cr minimum. I'm not sure about your heads, someone else will need to comment on them. From you info I would go with a little less cam but your on the right track! Goodluck! graemlins/waving.gif

Thanks. yeah I`ve looked through my Doug Herbert and could`nt find the same grind. I`ve seen it listed in a old national dragster in a Chet Herbert ad. I think 260/270 duration is too much for what I`m thinking. I`m pretty sure I`ll be running a solid cam and I know I want something in the 250/260 range but I did`nt know if anyone else had run that cam or not. It ran hard up to the 6500 shift point.

Stan Weiss'-cylinder heads (http://users.erols.com/srweiss/tablehdc.htm#BBChevy) My 820 heads were 113cc after unshrouding the intake valve they came out at 114.5cc

Nice chevelle by the way. Have you ran it at the track? looks great.
