Gear vendors start about $2500, but I am going to go with a 6 speed instead for about $500 more. No cutting the driveshaft and the 6 speed will look factory. Yet it gives me all the gears by shifting, the 6spd.

Do a quick search for "GV" and you'll get tons of info from people that have it, not from people that have a perception of it.

I have one, absolutely love it. Driveshaft is not a big deal, installation is not as hard as it seems, and the thing is too much fun to describe.

4 to 6 speeds manually (really 5 useable, 1st to 1st OD happens too fast).
4 speed OD when on automatic (I never use this way)
Bulletproof, unlike most any OD that will need to be beefed up to handle performance built engines.

I had one in my 67 behind a muncie 4 speed its rock solid, slams into overdrive hard enough to break the back tires loose, but at 22% overdrive I still cruised 70 MPH at 2600 rpm. Installation was not as simple as advertised, I had to cut some of the transmission tunnel on mine. Swapped it out for a Tremec TKO 600 5 speed this spring now 70 MPH is 1900 RPM and 17 mpg from a 454 and 3.70 gears I personally like the 5 speed a lot more than the Gear Vendors. Only got 13 mpg with the Gear Vendors but I don`t drive my car for economy I drive it for fun so the mileage really isn`t that big a deal but its nice to have. You could have a 5 or 6 speed for close to the same money and the lower rpm at cruise speed will lead to longer engine life and a sterio you can hear over the engine.

I am very happy with my gear Vendor/TH400 4.10 combo. in my computations, the conversion from auto to manual (Tremec) was alot more than Gear Vendor Purchase. Also, installation was a snap for me. I had to mold a few inches of the tunnel and get a new cross member, but that was it. 509Merlin is correct in pointing out that you don't get much of an overdrive, but that is by design.

What did you do with the GV Unit you swapped out? Still have it?

I have one behind my 496/TH400 combo - love it! Compared $ to a Tremec, built 700 etc, it is about the same cost, but the 400/GV is way stronger IMHO. 22% overdrive isn't the most you can find, but it ain't bad. And it WORKS AS ADVERTISED! I too ended up cutting a little window in the floor for bolt access, and modifying the crossmember. Not too big of a deal compared to changing over to a manual.
