I know this sounds crazy but here goes. I have a 1970 Nova drag car that is street legal. It has race seats in the front and has been mini tubbed. It also has a roll cage and there is no way a factory rear seat will fit.

I am trying to find a way to build or fit some sort of seat in the rear that would be safe for my 3 yr old. No I am not planning on running the 1/4 with him back there but we would like to take the car to car shows, weekend cruises, etc and as it is we must leave junior at home. He really likes the car and the sound of it but he does not get to ride in it. I am trying to find out what I can rig up so that I can get him started at an early age.

I was thinking something along the lines of buying a factory made car seat and fabbing up some sort of brackets to attach it to. Basically there would be no seat in the rear just some sort of mount that his seat attaches to. Obviously I want something that is safe and sturdy. Any ideas?

seems to me if it is sturdy and secured it should be ok. I looked at the laws for Georgia recently and it is hard to tell what is right. For a booster seat to be used you must have a shoulder belt. They didn't put shoulder belts in rear seats till the 90's. I guess they assume that everyone drives new cars.

Thanks for the reply. I was at wal mart and saw a regular style car seat with the 5 point harness that was good to 100lbs so I figured that would do away with the lap/shoulder belt issue. I am just trying to figure out how I should go about mounting the darn thing. I really dont want to bolt it directly to the floor because then he will not be able to see out. I need something that will raise it up.

What about a small back seat from something else? Like a VW? Junior isn't going to be three forever, so that way when the time comes, he'll have a regular seat to use.

I see you're located in Texas.

If you're anywhere within driving distance of Dallas, here's the guy to talk to. He builds all kinds of great one-off stuff and his craftsmanship is superb.

His work will be outstanding, and your kiddo's safety and comfort WILL be assured.

simpson sells a childs racing seat-when i had my nova, i used the stock rear seat, cut it down to fit the mini tub, as i remember i made either the back or bottom in 2 pieces so it would fit, had it ulp. to match the racing seats
if your exhaust is loud, your kid can blame you for poor hearing later in life, unlwss you get him a little helmet to protect their ears-hell after a short trip in mine i cant hear good-lol
