Im trying to remove the ignition key in my 71 but I it wont go past the on position. I have taken the column apart but cant depress the cylinder lock to pull the whole thing out. Is there a special tool for this. or is it not coming out because of the problems Im having with the key?

try rotating the key into the acc position and then inserting a paperclip or somethin else that will fit into the detent hole that should work. If you can turn the lock with the key than it should be able to come out

Here is a link that may help. Linky (http://www.chevelles.com/archive/files/69ignrem.htm)
Take the key out of the ignition while pushing the spring loaded retainer. The key buzzer pushes out when the key is inserted and will make removal hard. You can force the ignition out with the key stuck in the ignition, but it will break the key buzzer pawl off the ignition switch. It is plastic and comes on the replacement part.

1). Are you sure that the lower column lever on your 1971 column is all the way up? You will not be able to rotate your ignition key all the way to OFF-LOCK and be able to remove your key if the lever is in any position but full up.
2). Are you pressing in the correct location to remove your lock cylinder?

yeah I tried the indent spot like it said in the article, that still didn't do any good. The actual indent spot is recessed back in a hole to the right of where it looks like the indent should be. I wish I had pictures to illustrate but I finally got it all back together:hurray::thumbsup:
