: Engine not in straight??

Here's the story. My '67 BB is on solid motor mounts. I just installed a new aluminum drive shaft. It's slightly larger that the stock shaft in diameter. Well, it's hitting the tunnel on the right side at the tranny yoke. On the left side of the yoke I can slip my fingers between the tunnel and the yoke. The frame is not bent, so I'm lost as to why it's off center. Also the body bushings are original but still in one piece. Anyone got any ideas?

Sounds like it may be a problem with a possible incorrect trans crossmember.

Maybe try removing the trans crossmember and switch the ends side-to-side (i.e. sping it around) ...might tell you if it has the rear mount properly centered or not.

It's the original crossmember. I know it's not turned aournd because the hole for the park brake cable hook is in the right place (right side). The picture is the stock drive shaft.

Ever had the floor pans replaced or body bushings? Car ever been in an accident resulting in the frame being bent? Those things can also contribute to what you are seeing.

Nope none of those things. That's ok I fixed it I cut out the tunnel at the yoke and added sheet metal making a slightly taller hump. All's cool now.

Looks like the motor is sitting high on the left side, or is it just the angle of the photo?

I ran solid mounts last time and didn't have any problems. Looking at the engine it looks level (note the bottom of the oil pan is fairly level). That or it's the Heddman Headers. They are new and I've never used Heddman before. It's allways something.

It does look like the motor is sitting visably lower on the passenger side. might check the frame part of the motor mounts to see if one is taller than the other. The big block and small block mounts sit at different heights and you might have one of each in the replacement mounts.

Well if your refering to the mount on the frame they are BOTH SB mounts.

I think he is refering to the motor mounts they have short and tall.

I mesured both of them today. They are both the same 2 1/4 " tall, the same height as my old ones. I think it's the headers making it look that way.

I think the small block frame portion of the solid motor mounts sit higher than the big block ones and that is probably part of reason the driveshaft doesn't have enough clearance in relation to the floorboard. If i remember correctly the transmission crossmember is slotted on the ends and can be moved to allow centering the transmission in the tunnel. It appears you have had to cut additional clearance in the floor where the shifter mounts to the transmission which puzzles me because i don't remember having clearence problems there. But then there are lots of things i don't remember since i got old. Lowering the motor towards the front crossmember would have the effect of giving you more space for the driveshaft and the shifter. An extra inch or two will do wonders. I believe slicksty 7 is on to something in reccomending loosening the bolts that attach the transmission crossmember to the frame and aligning everything with a string by centering the crossmember but lower the engine first by getting the right frame mounts.

I'm not sure about the hight of the SB frame mounts compaired to the BB ones. But looking at pictures the Frame mounts of a BB have a raise section where the bolt goes through. I did have to cut the tunnel some time back for the shifter. It's a Hurst Compition Plus. I would like to resolve this though and have it correctly done.

BBC and SBC frame brackets for 64-67's are the same height and width. BB brackets are cosmetically different from SB ones to accomodate the BB mounts.

I just looked at the Moroso catalog and while the big block and small block solid mounts are different it appears the small block mount is 1/16" shorter and 1/8" narrower but this is the part that bolts to the engine so i don't know how that matches the crossmember part of the mount. This may be one for a chevy high perf. parts guy to answer, but their not the same.
