For those waiting on the Powertrax Information from the recent discussion.

I still do not have a response from Richmond Gear. An E-mail was sent on Friday 1/30/04 and Monday 2/2/04. Hopefully today we will get something in writing from them.

Drive the Monte over there to their parking lot and warm up the tires. That should get their attention and then you'll get a response. :D

Im curious as well. I have a performance locker and it is fairly quiet in normal operation, but sometimes it makes a loud pop when I turn when I am rolling it aroud in my shop. sorry to rob your post Tom, but when I saw you said that you installed one I was curious if yours does the same.

I Received Response from Richmond Today Here is how the discussion went................................

Hi,

I am interested in purchasing two Powertrax Performance Lockers. Can you tell me the part numbers I need for:

1. GM 12 Bolt Passenger Car 8.875 Ring gear 30 Spline

2. GM 8.5" 28 Spline 1972 Rear End Passenger Car

Thanks

Response :Tom, the p/n`s you are looking for are 92-0788-3005 for the 12 bolt, and
92-0785-2805 for the 10 bolt.

(These are the Newer style $400+)

I Emailed Back.................

John,

Thanks for the reply. Currently I am running the VX191A unit. What about the 1910 Lock Right version. Are the 1910 and VX191A one in the same?

The reason I ask is that I am currently running 10.70's in my 540 powered '71
Monte Carlo at 4000 pounds and with a 3.42 rear gear. The VX191A unit has been in my 12-bolt for 5 years. I really want to replace it with the exact same model (just for maintenance purposes) I am impressed with the durability.

When I try to look up the VX191A number it comes up not available from places like Summit and Jegs.
I remember powertrax stating the new quieter unit not being as durable as the VX191A unit was and they also stated the "performance locker" being
good to 600 HP.

Please advise....I appreciate your time and effort with this and I speak for many others as well.

Thanks Tom

Second Response :

Tom, Richmond Gear has had the Powertrax product line since sept. of 02. Sometime before we purchased this company the former owners discontinued these VX lockers. So these VX lockers are not part of our product line. The
lock-right lockers are more for street/offroad use. If i were going use one of the lockers we have for what you are doing with it, it would be the no-slip.

Tom, I can't believe that they would recommend the no slip over the lock right for your application.

Unless I am seriously missing some details here - isn't the lock right the more positively engaging model meant for more severe service?

I have one of the older performance lockers and I am truely impressed with its operation.

Thomas,

Yeah I know, he didn't really answer if the were actually the same unit.

Someone else want to try an E-mail without linking it to this post or my E-mails.

Reading into the reply it would seem the #1910 Lock Right is the weakest of the three models manufactured. It just doesn't seem they would use different materials to manuf

I received my #1910 Lock Right from Jegs and it looks exactly the same as the VX191A EXCEPT for the Color...But that may not matter.

I am going to try Tom's Differentials tomorrow, they used to carry the VX191A under powertrax ownwership. I just need a confirmation.

Is there a Detroit Locker made for the passenger 12-Bolt ??? Who sells them ????

I will install the #1920 model in my 8.5" 10 bolt in my Buick which will be 350 powered for this year. Next year 2005 it will have a 455 in it. That will be the real test on the #1920 Lock Right model I have for it.

Check out this link. It gives a definitve answer that the Performance Locker is Similar to the Lock Right but a little tougher.

http://www.reiderracing.com/performancelocker.htm

I also read on the Reider Site and on Drivetrain Direct's website that the New No Slip is just as strong or stronger than the original Performance Locker...

Looking at the exploded of the No-Slip, It sure looks a lot like the Perf Locker. I mean it has dogs just like the PL, and the assembly is almost the same. I don't see what they did to quiet it. Anyway, Thanks for the info, Tom.

i purchased my 92-0785-2805 back in august 02 on the advice of a powertrax representative.when i asked if i should go with a stronger unit he said the no-slip would handle a 600 horsepower street/strip ride.he also said they had phased out some of the "stronger" models.go figure.i haven't installed the no-slip yet but am hoping for a "positive" experience.

Just spoke to a very knowledgable person at Reider Racing.

From the experience they have the NO-Slip is a better built unit than the older Performance Lockers. He did say and I agree that anything with a cross shaft will have a weak point and that is where it is for the powertrax units.

The No Slip is made of the same slightly improved material and has the same lock up characteristics as the older performance version I currently run.

I will be returning the two Lock Rights I just bought... :(

So it will be a Beefed up Eaton in the Monte and a No-Slip in the Buick.

I am satisfied with this investigation..

Tom,do you think there would be a reliability issue with the units you bought? My friend just finished installing one in his 3.07 geared 12 bolt..

Chris,

What kind of torque is he putting in front of it?
converter? and weight of car. If it is street and some mild strip, it will probably last forever.

I wouldn't have any problem putting it in my Buick with the 350 and probably would be OK behind the street 455 for next year.

Tough call to make without any real experience.

I think the only carrier that doesn't require the use of a cross shaft would be a spool.

Tom,his car has a mild 396(220 @ .050,9.5 comp,2.06/1.72 valves),2400 B&M,and 3.07 gears..might go to the track once,twice a year,and he'll probably be running street radials too.

Chris,

he should have no problem with that combo and the once in a while at the track..Let's say I would do it and not think twice.

Big Red, eventually the PL I have will wear out and the teeth will get rounded. I am going to try a beefed up Eaton with special clutches and possibly 800 pound springs and go to 33 spline axles at the same time. Tom's Differentials sells a specially prepped Eaton in 33 spline .. just one of the options I am researching.
