: Windshield/Rear Window Foggy Film
mad70ss Jul 24th, 07, 1:17 PM Ok fellas, this little problem is driving me nuts.....
I installed a new PPG Windshield and Rear Window on my Velle about a month ago. I have cleaned the windows numerous of times, over and over again, they look clean, but as soon as I drive it out for a little cruise, get back, stick the velle back in the garage and the next day I have this thin layer of foggy film in the inside of the velle, i wipe it off with a micro towel and it will re-appear again the next day. WHAT THE $#!* IS IT? I never had that problem before and I just dont know what it might be, it is just driving me nuts. Any one have this problem or might know what it is so I can get rid of it??
Robinls5 Jul 24th, 07, 1:57 PM I do not know all the details, I would check your heater core, It could be a mist of anti-freeze. Then again I am guessing.

Keith Tedford Jul 24th, 07, 2:08 PM Sounds like the same problem that we had with our el Camino. While not spraying out, the heater core was just starting to weep and was damp in one corner. That was enough to fog up the windshield like a damp winter morning. Undo the heater hoses. Remove the four nuts on the engine compartment side. Undo the screws that hole the glove box in place. Move the box rearward and up as far as possible. The under dash heater unit will pretty well fall out in your hands without undoing any of the contro cables. Remove the core retainers. Replace the core and reverse the process. What looked like it might be a nightmare, turned out to be surprisingly simple and cured the foggy. Air conditioned cars might be a different matter. I'm surprised that you can't smell antifreeze.
mad70ss Jul 24th, 07, 2:47 PM really? you think it might be my heater core?? i dont smell antifreeze and why is my back rear window getting this film? its not really fog, its more like a light film on the windshield and rear window....

I have seen this happen when cars treated with vinyl cleaner and protectant (all different kinds) get out into the sun and the vinyl kind of outgasses whats been used to treat the seats, dash, doorpanels, etc. That film ends up stuck to your windows.
This never happened to you with the old glass? Did you cleanup the interior or use anything when you replaced the glass? Maybe on the rear deck?
Could probably verify this by covering the rear seat and rear package tray with a sheet or towel and seeing if it still happens. Quick enough, easy test.
Just a thought

you might be right, cause I just got my velle out of the body shop for some new skin and that is when i replaced the windows, rear and windshield. I had told them to not put any junk on the seats, dash, interior like armorall or anything. And I guess they forgot and dump some kind of armorall stuff to all the vinyl in the interior when i got it back, that stuff was oily and sticky. I never use anything in my interior before all i would do it wipe it down with a damped micro rag.
So as soon as i got home, i noticed that film crap on my windows so I figured it was that crap they thru on there, so I wiped it down, took most of it out, but i still get that little light film. It is driving me nuts. I will try covering it with something and leave the windows down a little and see what happens, and if this is the case, how could i get rid of it?

It will also happen with new vinly interior, even without any particular treatments. The stuff just outgasses in the heat so you it may just be time that corrects this. My fix - wear sunglasses and hide it from yourself and overlook it. Focus on the fact that you have new skins, new glass and others like myself have cars in pieces that have NO glass and NO interior.....and years before they will. :D
The glass is half full, bud.
Maybe ask the interior shop if they have a recommendation, maybe diluted simple green (very diluted) or woolite or something would help.

Thats true, I am going to leave the windows open half way when it is in the garage, and just keep cleaning it with some simple green until it stops.
Thanks Bud!!
