I picked up a 400 SB for free that hadnt been running for a long time so I took all the pistons out, removed the heads, everything except the crank and cam. How does the harmonic balancer come out. Is there a pin that needs to be removed? I can see a groove. THanks for any help!!

DJ,
The damper is pressed on. To remove it you use a puller tool similar to a steering wheel puller but heavier-duty. DO NOT use a puller that grabs onto the outside diameter, this will just ruin the balancer. The puller uses the 3 fine-thread holes that the pulley bolts on with.
When you re-install the balancer, a tool is used to push it on. If you use a hammer, the balancer is ruined.

Good grief! Some guys have all the luck. A friend of mine was just GIVEN 2 '62 Bubble Tops because the guy lost his storage space.

you can buy a harmonic balancer puller for 20 bucks at your local auto parts store, or you can rent one for about five bucks.
