dart468 Nov 21st, 04, 5:48 PM i know it`s a bit of topic, but i got cheap mercruiser hydraulic roller cam and lifters.i mean real cheap.however,i don`t know anything about the cam except it cames from mark 5 engine.part numbers are 2296 and 6036 stamped in rear of the cam.does anyone know the lift, duration etc.or where i can find them out?any help would be greatly appreciated.planning to use the cam in my tow wehicle for my -66 ss hardtop chevelle tube chassis race car.
Bob West Nov 21st, 04, 6:40 PM Don't marine engines run backwards? or one of them run backwards when used in tandem?
Redmanf1 Nov 21st, 04, 9:59 PM It depends on the application. In most boats it is the drive or gear box that counter rotates. It could be out of a 500 HP. Do you know anything about what it came out of?

Yes....
Let me check my numbers, I can help you with this
Keith Tedford Nov 22nd, 04, 12:49 AM Be careful. Some marine engines are reverse rotation.
dart468 Nov 22nd, 04, 10:51 AM i think it`s a single engine set-up where the cam comes from and all marine engines i`ve took apart had normal cams.my buddy runs a marine hyd.roller in his 509 bbc.at least the distributor spins the right direction.would be ever so grateful for specs!

That cam is a standard rotation piece from a 454 oval port Mercruiser Gen VI marine engine. Merc Part #431-580478, Chevrolet part #12552296. Chevrolet rates the cam as follows:
204*/209* @ .050 with
.480"/.483" lift valve
.282"/.284" lifter
The actual measured specs are as follows:
280*/299* @ .004
266*/284* @ .006
236*/244* @ .020
206*/211* @ .050
113*/114* @ .200
115.5* ICL
120.5* ECL
118* LSA

That same cam is used in the HT 502 Chevrolet engine and is ideal for towing. In that package it makes 512 lbs/ft torque @ 2800 rpm.

trimless Nov 22nd, 04, 12:15 PM I remember way back in 1982 when Ford came out with their hot new Mustang GT, it had a marine cam. I remember specifically it was avertised as having a "hot marine cam". That little mustang ran good for it's day. I waited on the 83 model before buying because the 82 only had a little 2 barrel carb. The 83 had a 4 barrel and some other goodies but I don't know if it had a marine cam or not. I won a lot of races with that little stang. OK, that was off subject but couldn't resist sharing the memories!
Redmanf1 Nov 22nd, 04, 2:03 PM That is probable the merc 454, 330HP cam
dart468 Nov 22nd, 04, 4:52 PM thank you to every one about very valuable information.the cam is exactly what i hoped for!!
pdq67 Nov 22nd, 04, 9:38 PM I think you can still buy 454HO and 502HO hy-roller new, take-out cams from Competition Products for like $40 or so..
They are in the 220 to 224 degrees at .050" and .500" lift range if not mistaken..
May be two better, inexpensive, stock cams to consider if you want a schosh more power and I figure they will still make great midrange grunt, but just not so much RIGHT off idle as the Marine cam..
