What size tubes? I had 2" comps on my car before I switched to the 1.75" dynomax headers,You have to come up from under the car, raise the car, jack the motor up and remove the oil filter,it will be a tight fit, they have to be dinged to clear the brake dist. block or move the dist. block. I did not like the hooker headers because they hung down too low and it didnt take much for them to bottom out.

Well, I can't give you specific instructions for your exact situation, but I am trying to fit my Hedman intermediate length headers into my '69 SS396. The instructions said I had to remove the clutch cross shaft and feed the headers up from the bottom, but I looked it over and decided it would be easier to disconnect the steering shaft and move it to one side and drop them in from the top. They went in pretty easy, although they almost touch the engine cross-member and do touch the frame next to the upper rear suspension arm mount. I can live with that, my problem is on the RH side where the header almost touches the brake pipe that goes to the RH front caliper. All I can do there is put a different pipe or different headers in. I guess every installation is different. Just look at the variety of responses to my "Installing headers on an SS396 Chevelle" posting from a few weeks ago.

In my 70 I put in hooker ceramic-coated super comps (2in primries), on the driver side I had to modify my Z-bar(4spd) then I had to take my motor mount off the block and grind half of the tab that folds 90 degrees to the block off. Steering causes no problem on my application, although it did take my uncle and I 3 hours to install, but w got 'em! good luck.
